Northwestern athletics issues

My take on the lack of penalties to players is hazing became so integrated/accepted in player leadership culture the investigation found it hard to blame individual players.

Just shows how powerful football is on a P5 campus. All this sh*t happens and the president hands the head coach a 2 week suspension in the middle of the summer?

I would expect that 2 week suspension to turn into something much more serious, but not for noble reasons. Rather, the president is now trying to save his own ass.

And at Northwestern, which seems that the institution and students/alumni are less passionate about college sports, at least relative to the rest of the conference.

Can anyone please explain this to me. Why is this so bad for Fitzgerald. If he didn’t know then frankly the 2 weeks was to much. Even if it was a should have known situation I don’t think he should be fired.
You don't think a coach that knows about allegedly sexual hazing should potentially lose their job? That is certainly something.

Remember Michael Sam after he came out? All sorts of athletes said they would have been/ would be uncomfortable with an openly gay teammate. Though he did absolutely nothing unethical or disrespectful.

Then you have athletes like the NW football team basically raping their teammates (don’t forget about that Iowa HS wrestler who raped his teammate) and then you get players saying “well it isn’t a big deal just guys having fun.” What the hell? That type of hazing is sick and the guys doing it are very I’ll people.

And based n these allegations, not knowing isn’t even a defense because they are happening at team events/athletic facilities.

If Fitz didn’t know, it’s because he didn’t want to know, and that’s also not acceptable

If a P5 head coach "didn't know" something like this was so prevalent in his program was going on, he either didn't want to know (like you mentioned) or he is incompetent.

I was looking for the Northwestern thread just to post - "hey, sounds like NW runs their program just like Iowa". Now I know why I couldn't find the thread, OP made the connection days ago.

It is also his job to know this.

As you mentioned it’s one thing if it took place off campus with a couple idiots but to have it routinely happen in an athletic facility is inexcusable. It is legit your job to know and to create a culture that not only doesn’t permit it to happen but to allow players to speak up when the abuse occurs without fear of repercussions.

Betting he is done at NW
I would think almost certainly. Even if not involved, these types of things just can't happen. Part of a coach's role is to instill a culture where these very things aren't occuring. I fully realize he can't control his players, but it's part of what the role entails. Any coach, regardless of success has to keep guys in check as much as possible and have enough "good guys" to keep their peers in check.

Completely separate but always factors in... I know their history sucks and there is a recency bias to some of the wins/losses, but I think the air was deflating from the tire regardless of the allegations. Now, I don't think they can get any better coach as he seemed to get a lot out of the little talent they had, but they have enough money to keep trying.

Hire an $$ outside investigator that takes 6 months. With all the information, the president proclaims a two week suspension. Almost immediately, waffles. Good God, who hires these Nim wits?
Where there is smoke, there's fire. "This situation is far bigger than just head coach Pat Fitzgerald and his future. It should involve questioning school president Michael Schill and the entire football program." https://theathletic.com/4677512/2023/07/10/northwestern-football-pat-fitzgerald-investigation/
