New Uniforms Revealed

Does anyone have any insight on how we went from the original design we voted on (white helmet, cardinal jersey, gold pants) to what eventually came about (i.e., the "USC knockoffs")?

Here's a slightly updated version I created with the current B12 logo & twisty numbers (I can't find the original images from the website):

Edit: the original design did not have a gold outline on the numbers on the white jersey

This is actually a pretty good modified mockup. Something like this might have been better than what we did get in 2007-08. Just not the white helmet (red or gold OK) on the left! But what we had from 2008-2017 served its purpose at the time (albeit too much like USC).

Just a suggestion, generally only use 2 colors (if white is a color) between the helmet, jersey, and pant. The white helmet on the left doesn't look good. Try switching that to a cardinal (or gold, or both) helmet. :)

I definitely used to feel the same way, but then Wyoming & ULM did it & I think it works pretty well. & then Wisconsin wore those beautiful throwbacks in 2019. Def a throwback feel with the white helmet/dark jersey/lighter pants.

See the "Chrome gold" in the logo and stipe here? What if we used that instead of yellow gold?
Similar to the red chrome we have had.

I dont know. Just an idea. I think we need some gold options at least a gold helmet, and accents in our Whites and Reds to tie it all together. Possibly a gold pant, but even that is not totally necessary, with some gold accents to tie things together, with a gold helmet.

Chrome gold = good

yellow being substituted for gold = bad

Those are great. We need white in the home unis/numbers. Throw in alternate helmets and pants, and those are some of the best unis in the country.

t-noah, no offense, but you've made some of the ugliest mockups I've ever seen. Maybe pull back on the critiques. I would prefer a cardinal helmet, but I think the white works with the striped helmet. The key is the white numbers and lettering. I would change Iowa State to Cyclones for the home jerseys. Those look so much better than what we have.

Yeah that's cool. I suppose once every couple of years (if we had a set like that). Has to be some white in the socks (and most of the team won't wear those full red leggings, some do (i.e., Purdy, others); that's more of an NFL look. I do like the wider helmet stripes on this set.

No it's OK. I've made some real stinkers in the past. Still do.

How about the two (or three) colors on the left?

The #ba1827 red is a nice red, right in between our current official 'university' and 'athletic' cardinals. The e7a200 gold is nice, I like it but it might be too dark to reasonably have hope of being adopted. JMO. The 3rd color here, a0917e is a nice historical color. I could see it used for select trim at times maybe.

The more I think about it, I don't know why we just don't use the 'university' gold we have now, Hex #f1be48. The gold I chose for gold pants (post 5026 above), is very close to our '70's gold, we already have that in the official ISU 'university' gold! We just need to use it for gold pant or helmet if we were to go that route (incorrect! It's still much lighter than the '70's gold).

I like the current darker 'athletic' cardinal that we are using now; although in full sun it can look brighter and often does. Who knows if it's a different, brighter shade from Nike?? Regardless of whatever cardinal shade it is, keep it the same.

This was right around the time we were losing Elwood Drive, so everyone in Ames was already pretty pissed off.

P.S. - It's still Elwood Drive.

Yellow pants suck. They suck. They suck worse with white jerseys, but they all suck. All of them.

Yeah- in 2007 or whenever this came out, it was absolutely blasted by our fanbase and the plans were ditched based on the harsh feedback at the time

Yeah here is a reprint of one of the articles from the time...the announcement had the winning logo but on the cardinal helmet instead of white. One reason people got hot under the collar about white helmet (besides looking like "high school" cheap) was that Texa$ had a white helmet, and Chizik was from Texas...

Then a couple years later we played UConn (first time white uniforms, 2011) and (edit) Akron (in white helmets with stencil logo, 2017) and we all went crazy in love.
Chizik was before his time! :)
Excerpt:
The media conference also included a surprise announcement by Pollard that the football team will be showcasing the new graphic on a cardinal-colored helmet.
"I believe the most important message from this process is that we listened to our fan base," Pollard said. "Our staff initially proposed the concept of a white helmet to help make our new helmet logo stand out. However, the white helmet, according to many fans, conflicted with our stated desire to return to our traditional cardinal and gold colors.
As a result, we've chosen a cardinal helmet because it's what the majority of our fans desired."
In mid-August, after a 6-month process which included an exhaustive study of many submitted concepts, the athletics department shared three different designs (labeled "ISU", "Iowa State" and "Cyclones") and, in an unusual move, asked fans to vote for their favorite. The department also solicited written feedback and more than 1,500 individual emails were received and reviewed.
"We felt that asking for input from our fan base was critical, unique and in this case, very helpful," Pollard said. "Our helmet, coupled with the completely re-designed football uniform – cardinal jerseys with gold pants at home and white jerseys with either cardinal or gold pants on the road – has helped us re-align with our traditional school colors."
After the victory over Iowa two weeks ago, which featured ISU wearing replica 1977 Peach Bowl jerseys, there was a great deal of feedback from fans urging an adoption of those uniforms as the permanent gameday look. Two of the most-prominent features of those uniforms – the re-introduction of gold and the shoulder piping – are, indeed, integrated into what the Cyclones will wear beginning in 2008.
"The Cyclones' colors are cardinal and gold," first-year football coach Gene Chizik said. "We're one of only two schools in the BCS with cardinal and gold as their stated school colors and we're excited and proud to be showcasing them next fall."

Iowa State's school colors have been listed as cardinal and gold since 1899 when the Athletics Council noted that a "striking set of new colors" to represent the sports teams was going to replace the institution's original color scheme (set in 1891) of gold, silver and black. Over time, many shades of cardinal and gold have appeared on team uniforms.
"There's a feeling that our colors have bled into a brighter red and less of a cardinal red," Pollard said. "The new colors will feature a richer, deeper cardinal, and the current gold. There is a letter sweater (from the 1900s) in the Jacobson Building Atrium and this new cardinal shade is much closer to our origin. Lastly, we're moving away from the blue accents which had become too prominent in a number of applications."
Pollard said the new mark and colors will extend to all 18 Iowa State sports teams and the athletics department as a whole. What started out as a football uniform and helmet update after the hiring of Chizik, led to the department closely examining its entire identity package.
"What we found was that there wasn't clarity or consistency in our identity or team apparel. Our colors had become red with a significant amount of blue and white in the merchandise, marks and uniforms," Pollard said. "Our coaches also said that when recruiting out of state, most people do not equate our present mark with Iowa State. There is confusion with other schools sharing a similar abbreviation and/or mascot and there is a general disconnect with recruits and people outside of the state's borders."

Attached also are the uniform pictures from that press conference...alas, they never ended up as "gold" as they were that day:

Remember when McDonalds tweeted at us when we wore gold?

Yeah... let's not do that again.
No, I don't.

But I assume if it occurred, it's a reference to a combo involving gold jerseys, which I haven't seen anyone advocating in this thread.

Yes it was 2014 vs Toledo...I agree I think we've all moved on from full yellow! I am still cool with the pants but can see why people are still a bit shy after being burned!!

Those are my favorite, in no particular order. But I wouldn’t be opposed to storming Norman this year in BWB, if they have the proper jerseys to go with it.

I have an idea for someone more talented than me… can we see some of the Trice stripes in Red/White/Blue? As much as it pains me to say it, I love seeing the American flag tiger hawk on Iowa’s helmets. I don’t think the I-State logo would work that well on helmets, and heaven forbid we make the bugle into a flag! Just an idea.
