New DG game plan...

I'd like to see him tone it down a touch in the last 5 minutes of the halves. Just take care of the ball and try to set someone up.
We fell completely apart in the last 1:30 of the first half and still won this game. Amazing
This is our only choice this year to be competive, so you better get used to DG hoisting up a lot of shots.
He shot 5-24 and was still WAY better than what Iowa had at point guard.

StLousClone: Who gives a **** what his career 3 point percentage is? I care about now. I don't care about the 22% he shot as a freshman/sophomore. I care about the 35% he's shooting now.

Well DG is back down to 29.5% after last night's performance. You might be surprised to learn that DG has shot more threes this year than anyone else on our team. He's 18-61 (29.5%) while Scotty is 35-59 (59.3%), JVB is 20-49 (40.8%) and Jake Anderson is 9-25 (36.0%).

I understand your point about Jake Anderson. And I'm okay with DG shooting an occasional three especially when the shot clock is winding down. But I think all 7 of his attempts against Iowa came early in the shot clock. We have other options that are proven shooters.

DG is just streaky. He doesn't have a consistent shot like Scotty does, because DG has never been given the green light to play like that. He didn't have good form last night, but other nights he has.

DG was fantastic last night. Without him we get destroyed. Keep it up!

His energy is great.

By the way guys.. We won.

Sorry, I just watched the replay and I have to chime in here. I don't know how anyone can defend a 5-24 shooting performance. 4 of his 5 makes were layups including the one at the end of the game. He also made a floater from about 7 feet, but he missed about 10 other floaters from 5-10 feet. The interesting thing is that ISU rarely got the rebound on his misses. Iowa was packing it in and letting him shoot it from long distance... so I'm not sure I understand the argument that we need DG to hoist it up a lot or our offense will sputter. Seems to be the exact opposite to me. We are only efficient when DG gets all the way to the rim or he passes it to someone else. He's easily going to end up with the worst career 3 point percentage in ISU history. Now that Hoiberg has had 10 games to evaluate DG's shooting, I wouldn't be suprised if we see a different DG for the rest of the season. He should focus on shooting layups and buzzer beaters.

We won the game last night because SC was unbelievably hot, Iowa missed a lot of layups and Iowa turned the ball over a ton. With all that said, we need DG to play close to 40 minutes/game because he is the best PG we have. I just want to see him play like a PG and realize that he is not our best option for shooting the ball. I believe we would have been killed last night if we played a mediocre Big 12 team on the road. None of our Big 12 opponents respect DG's shooting and they would be absolutely giddy if he were to take 24 shots from floor.

Amen!

I didn't suggest Fred pull him out. I just think he needs to give our higher percentage shooters a chance to drain em. I love his confidence... just need to think before jacking up shots.

I agree. Would like to see Jake get the ball in the last two minutes. Jake can finish at the hoop and is a good passer. DG is still very valuable to this team but I think he takes too many shots considering he has the lowest fg% of all the starters.

Every guard on the team should have the green light to shoot threes when they're open provided they aren't from 25'. If your toes are nearly on the line and there's no hand in your face, shoot*!

*Unless in special circumstances....using clock, fast break, etc.

OK... if DG is knocking down a high percentage in practice I'm OK with continuing to let him try to get his shot working in games.

If not... why not let him do everything he does well and have him feed those players who have high percentage shots? If we could of had other players take the 20 or so shots DG jacked up only to miss... we may have had another 16-20 points scored.

Fred has indicated that DG does hit them in practice. Remember when he calmed down DG midgame, told him to shoot like he means it and they will go in just like they do in practice. He did, and they did.

I'm just posting this is a statement, not directed at or towards anyone.

The reason DG shot so many times isn't because he's selfish - He was open. Fred wants the open man to shoot. If players don't, you end up w/ McDermott's game plan, which allowed one or two people to score - and therefore allowed the defense to guard only those players close. Predictably, our offense stalled often. It was not a gameplan for success.

The hawks were guarding everyone close, sagging on DG to stop penetration, and force an outside shot. Fred has stated that if they have an open shot they take it. DG had an off-night - everyone does. The hawks gameplan might have worked if they didn't periodically forget to guard Scott. It still blows my mind how open they left him late in the game.

DG has the green light to shoot when he is open, and Hoiberg wants him to keep shooting even when hitting. I am going to trust Fred much more than all of the arm chair coaches on this board.

I'd be curious to know who currently holds that record and what it is, StLouie.

It's interesting that you asked as DG just moved into the Top 20 in career 3-Pointers Attempted. He's now attempted 206 in his career:

1. 637 Jake Sullivan, 2001-04
2. 487 Dedric Willoughby, 1996-97
3. 457 Fred Hoiberg, 1992-95
4. 377 Michael Nurse, 1999-2000
5. 345 Justus Thigpen, 1990-93
6. 339 Hurl Beechum, 1992-95
7. 305 Lucca Staiger, 2009-10
8. 301 Rahshon Clark, 2005-08
9. 277 Kantrail Horton, 2000-01
10. 274 Will Blalock, 2004-06
11. 265 Curtis Stinson, 2004-06
12. 255 Bryan Petersen, 2008-09
13. 250 Wesley Johnson, 2007-08
14. 236 Craig Brackins, 2009-10
15. 228 Terry Woods, 1987-90
16. 225 Ron Bayless, 1992-93
17. 214 Mike Taylor, 2007
18. 213 Julius Michalik, 1992-95
19. 207 Brian Pearson, 1989-92
20. 206 Diante Garrett, 2008-11

So of all the ISU players who have attempted 200 or more FGs, where does DG rank in terms of 3-Point Percentage for his career? Take a look:

1. Jake Sullivan 42.4%
2. Fred Hoiberg 40.0%

3. Lucca Staiger 40.0%
4. Ron Bayless 39.1%
5. Dedric Willoughby 39.0%
6. Michael Nurse 38.7%
7. Kantrail Horton 38.3%
8. Bryan Petersen 38.0
9. Hurl Beechum 37.8
10. Will Blalock 36.5%
11. Justus Thigpen 36.2%
12. Brian Pearson 36.2%
13. Mike Taylor 36.0%
14. Terry Woods 35.1%
15. Rahshon Clark 33.9%
16. Julius Michalik 33.3%
17. Wesley Johnson 31.6%
18. Curtis Stinson 30.2%
19. Craig Brackins 29.2%
20. Diante Garrett 27.7%

Garrett has made 57 of his 206 career three point attempts. Brackins made 69 of his 236 career attempts. So Garrett could catch Brackins if, for example, he makes 12 of his next 30 attempts (40%). DG is going to have to get hot to catch Brackins, but he could do it. I would love to see it!

DG opens up the offense, make or miss. If he was one dimensional the other team could create their defense around it.

DG is the leader and does more than stats show.

Exactly, if he's not a threat to score from the outside, the d can back off, closing down a lot of lanes to the bucket.

You're going to see a lot of teams backing off him as the season goes along. If you're game planning against us, getting DG to take a long jump shot is exactly the result you want. He is a senior, he is what he is by now, and he's never going to be anything beyond an average at best jump shooter. But he's going to have to shoot a lot in this offense, we just don't have enough shooters/playmakers to take the pressure off of him this year.
