New Commit: JUCO CB Lonnie Johnson

Well, for some it can be more about what you're proud of representing your university - short timer non-qualifiers and transfers, or qualifying high school kids who sign and actually assimilate into the university, instead of just wearing a jersey on the field/court. Campbell is doing great so far, and i get what he needs to do to initially get things rolling. But Rhoads went that route in his latter years and didn't win crap. Freddy started that way, supposedly to jump start the program, and never stopped - too much of a rush to 'just win' so he could move on. It's personal preference. Be nice if the basketball team had scholarshipped at least 1 Iowa kid since pre-Fred.

It's a question for some whether we want short-timer jucos and tranfers in bulk to wear a jersey for 1 or 2 years, or qualifiers that sign out of high school and assimilate into the university, to represent the university. Has ISU scholarshipped an iowa kid in MBB since pre-Fred? No! Fred just wanted to win now so he could move on to the NBA. Some people love it. Some don't. Rhoads (I like Rhoads) loaded up on jucos the last 2 years, and failed. I get why Campbell is doing it this year with a short time frame, and he is doing well given the circumstances, but it would be nice if ISU money sports could ever get off the juco/transfer train. Maybe it's impossible in order to be competitive. Im not talking about individuals - Im talking about the numbers. Anybody who seriously thinks these juco numbers are not indicative of compromising student athlete academic standards is delusional. There is tons of juco talent out there to be had. Programs that dont, or can't, recruit them are not ignorant of that fact. ISU is not so recruiting savvy so as to recognize talent that other programs can't see. As for undeserved sense of entitlement, I don't know what you're referring to. Programs that have higher standards are 'entitled' - undeservedly so? Programs and universities and conferences can set the standards they want, including if those standards impair 'wins' on the field. This is intercollegiate college sports.

Awful elaborate troll job. Could've just said "Iowa and the big 10 do things the right way."

People would've gotten the joke and moved on.

I just want to know which kid from Iowa Fred was supposed to offer to come to ISU. Gnarly?

A HS 1 & done player should be avoided too? So, Kentucky has it all wrong, as does Duke... & Kansas... & UNC

The batches of meth this holiday season in hawg-eye households must have been contaminated or something.

I'm about to blow your mind. The big ten doesn't have a partial qualifier rule. Therefore, they are taking these juco students out of high school.

Juco kids have at least shown an ability to do junior college level work.

You may want to let all those pretigious big ten teams know they are compromising their academics.

Taking on a JUCO has nothing to do with academic standards of a conference. Any kid that graduates with an AA degree will qualify for any of those schools. One of our JUCOs had a 32 on their ACT...

This. Taking a JUCO has absolutely nothing to do with academic standards or partial qualifiers. If the kid gets his AA degree, he can get in pretty much anywhere in P5. And it's not a surprise that ISU is going heavy JUCO. They've won 8 games in 3 years and got the coach fired. Obviously a talent upgrade is needed.

Might want to check the ISU Mbb roster (Brady Ernst) not that it matters. As far as who represents the university, I'll take as many Demond Tucker's and EJ Bibbs as I can get. As long as a kid contributes on the field and stays out of trouble, I'm fine with it. ISU fans are well versed in taking the moral high ground losing with great citizens. It's funny to me that a fan of a team that just went 12-1 has the gall to come on here and ask why ISU has to go get JUCOs. It's about talent. ISU has very little history or tradition. And, it is located a long ways from talent. If you don't get players that can win, you are eventually going to get fired. Rhoads figured that out too late.

There's literally nothing wrong with getting Jucos, and dumb not to upgrade the roster any way you can.

Especially if you need some upperclassmen at a position.

Shhh. They quietly admit partial qualifiers, some of them twice (e.g. Shonn Greene, et al) and hope nobody notices.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Isu recruiting class when all is said and done will be ranked right there with mighty Iowa's or maybe even higher....which would be incredibly impressive. What I sense from Hawk media and fans is they are just now realizing that CPR is gone and so might be the days of dead last recruiting classes.

That's unlikely to happen. No way are we jumping 30 spots at this point.

I haven't been blown away by Campbell's recruiting like others have (though not disappointed, either). That said, I don't think recruiting rankings will spell success or failure for Campbell. It will be about player development, IMHO.

How many of the JUCOs signed previously and in this class were non-qualifiers?

Can not give you the exact number, but can confidently state, given my experience with juco programs, that the vast majority of juco players that are talented enough to move on to a D1 Power school, were non-qualifiers. That would include 3star and above rated players out of high school. Clearly the ones who move on after only one juco season are qualifiers because if not, they can't. I can also tell you the HC of a higly ranked juco FB program, has told me it is tougher to place his non-qualifiers at B10 schools, than B12 schools.

Per Scout today, the B10 has 244 signees/commits, 12 of which are juco (ave .857 per team). The B12 has 172 signees/commits, 31 of which are juco (ave 3.1 per team). The B12 so far leads all Power-5 conferences in incoming jucos, and its the smallest conference with only 10 teams. The B12 is behind only the MWC and Conf USU in juco concentrations. ISU currently leads the B12 with 6, and only has 16 recruits so far. ISU also has a boatload of jucos returning following Rhoads' last 2 recruiting classes. Iowa has 24 recruits, zero (0) of which are juco.

You can draw your own general conclusions as to whether or not these juco statistics reflect in any way upon which teams/conferences have higher academic standards/models for student athletes. And I'm not aware of any sources which compile statistics for schools that sign dismissed transfers like Hoiberg did. For a broader view of overall academic ratings of Universities, go to U.S News University Academic Ratings. I'll save some of you the effort of a reply - 'F*ck Iowa and F*ck gnarlyboy". Enjoy the bowl season.[/QUOTE]

Are you really that stupid that you dont know your own conference admission policies for student athletes? You might want to check the b1g entrance requirements for incoming athletes. Unlike other P5 conferences, your schools admit the partial qualifiers outright....have a nice day and enjoy all the back patting over on the hawk boards...after the rose bowl those will end

@Lonnie30johnson:
I would like to announce that I will be joining the 2017 class .sorry to all the fans. We will see what happens in December

@AlexHalsted:
Iowa State 2016 JUCO CB signee Lonnie Johnson officially announces he has reclassified to 2017.
This is not a surprise if you've been following Iowa State recruiting closely. He will be a graduate in December with two years left.
[Scholarship] Offer will stand from what I know, but it sounds like he's going to re-open things and see what's out there.

Just curious.... has a guy ever decommitted/failed to make it to isu..... then actually came back later?
