*** Monte Morris NBA Analysis/Assumptions ***

you are being sarcastic but you are actually correct. for a lot of guys, getting into the first round is about PERCEIVED upside. the longer you are in college, the higher the confidence level of your projection to many GM's. if you are a stud, thats fine, but MM doesnt project to that level in the NBA. hes too short and doesnt have speed or athleticism to overcome it, at least in terms of being a high pick. that doesnt mean he cant be an NBA player though.

Coming from the guy that said that MM = Gessel. lol.

Very similar college player as Tyler Ennis from Syracuse. 6-2 180 13/3/5.5 and 35% from 3. He was drafted high, 18th overall (probably because he was highly recruited and went to a powerhouse), and his line in his rookie season was 3/1/2 and 28% from 3.

I do think Ennis will get better. He was stuck behind a few other pgs in Phoenix, but now that he's more of the guy in Milwaukee, I can see his numbers taking a good jump next season.

If he has another year on par or better than last year, he's gone. No question in my mind.

I agree, but I do not think he will be ready. My Opinion of monte is that he is small, he will always be "small" for a pro point guard. If he has another great season where he bumps his stats up even more, then there is a huge posibility of him leaving for the NBA. But monte is a smart man, I gained a ton of respect for him when after last year he acknowledged that there was no way he was ready to guard the chris pauls of the world night in and night out. He is going to be a great player and I hope he has the best possible NBA career, but I truly feel it would benefit him greatly to go 4 years, and not be a Tyus Jones type (undersized, lots of intangibles, but will get bullied around in the NBA). I think he can still get stronger, and continue to develope that outside shot, and after 2 years would be idael.

But again, like its stated, if he has another big year it will be hard to turn down the NBA if teams are in your ear.

PS - would love to see him on the bulls with CFH

Nobody freak out that NCAA and NBA are different or that Hornacek and Monte are different players, but Hornacek has ISU's all time-point guard type records and is also #38 in steals all time in the NBA and #50 in assists all time in the NBA.

ISU Steals Record: Hornacek, 211
Monte if he simply continues last season's stats for two years with no improvement, 238

ISU Assists Record: Hornacek, 655
Monte if he simply continues last season's stats for two years with no improvement, 662

Then there's that he is easily the best in the entire NCAA in A/TO ratio in the 13 years they have officially kept the stat, shattering the record his freshman year and again leading the nation with huge separation his sophomore year.

The kid is a player, he's young and will get stronger, he is a very unique talent himself. A lot of the superstars we compare him to couldn't touch certain things he did his first two college seasons.

I think it's funny how people like to bring up guys like Rondo, CP3 or Tony Parker to prove that Monte isn't too small for the NBA. Those guys are once every few years talent levels who are still small for their position in the NBA but have exceptional talent that make up for it. Not saying size is a major problem for Monte but strength & frame are a concern at the next level.

Yet they are all in the league at the same time, and have the same size. How about these guys?

Monte is 6'2" 170

In order by usage (I've removed a few I know do not have the same build, such as Deron Williams or are just freak athletes, like Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose, etc):

Isaiah Thomas (5'9" 185)
Brandon Jennings (6'1" 169)
Ish Smith (6'0" 175)
Schroder (6'1" 168)
Brandon Knight (6'3" 189...a lot bigger than MM)
Michael Conley (6'1" 175)

There are many more, and perhaps Conley is the best compare. Remembering Conley when he was at Ohio State, he was not a great shooter, but he was a scorer (like all others above). Monte's usage rate is way down for a PG. If he shows he can score more, he's gone...IMO.

Knowing Monte and his mother, whatever his stats and projections end up being, I'm sure he will make the right decision. Fred will also be a great resource.

I think his stats are less important than his physical development. He needs to add some muscle and get up to a solid 180-185 pounds while maintains his quickness. His outside shot developed nicely last year and he needs to continue that trend.

Also, his assist to turnover ratio is fantastic but I think he needs to up his offensive aggressiveness, which may affect that statistic negatively but which will make him a much more "pro ready" player AND a better offensive weapon this season.

maybe he just wants to get paid to play...

Maybe...but usually unless a kid hates college or has academic issues he doesn't declare early unless there is a guaranteed contract (first round pick) waiting for him. Right now everything out there has Monte as a mid-late second round pick or not getting drafted at all, and people are acting like it's a no-brainer that he's gone...which is foolish.

he will decide whats best for him, not Iowa State as he should, he will make good money wherever he plays

Monte is one of the rare college point guards that plays (or has played) in a system where the coach doesn't limit what he can do. Fred would let Monte dictate the offense and the entire flow of the game (I'm sure Coach Prohm will be similar) and that is very important to NBA teams.

The NBA doesn't draft based on college teams success. They draft for physical talent with tons of upside.

There were players rated higher than Monte in his state coming out of HS even though he was Mr. Basketball because they had a lot more physical talent and upside.

It's similar to the Niang/Noel situation.

I don't think most of the people saying he'll be gone after this year follow the NBA too closely.

Unless guys just hate college or have academic problems they don't leave early to be mid-late second round picks...and that is where MM is on all the draft boards that he shows up on at all.

He could certainly play his way up this year but it's ridiculous to act like its a foregone conclusion that he's gone.

Sure they do, Kyle Anderson, KJ McDaniels, Jarnell Stokes, Johnny O'Bryant, DeAndre Daniels, Spencer Dinwiddie, Jerami Grant, Glenn Robinson III, Nick Johnson, Jordan Clarckson, and Semaj Christian were all guys who left early to be 2nd round picks last year, not to mention the players who leave early and go undrafted each year. Some guys are just ready to get paid whether it's in the NBA or overseas.

I agree, no team was ever like, welp Witchita State almost went undefeated, So Ron Baker is totally better than Andrew Wiggins. Nope, just doesnt translate like that in the NBA. Need to be a physical freak as well as a person who puts up stats. And even there is a blurry line, Big men get taken so often hoping that they develop into the player the front office feels it could be, but rarely does it pan out that way

I guess I hope Monte has such a monster season that he is a lottery pick. Seems like that would indicate a successful season for us! :twitcy:

There's also 60+ kids told they will be first round picks(there's only 30 first round picks). Maybe Monte having a true NBA connection will help his decision.
