First - the Packers were screwed on that call.
That being said, conventional wisdom (and what the players are coached to do) says knock that ball down/out of bounds/etc. precisely for this very reason. He allowed the receiver to make a play on the ball and allowed the ref's judgment call to be taken into account. Of course, batting the ball down can backfire as it did in the Lions-Titans game. But intercepting the ball backfired here, didn't it?
As far as the missed pass interference, the commentators were mentioning that offensive PI never gets called in that situation, and I've never seen defensive PI get called there, either. Therefore, as blatant as that PI was, it's a non-issue with me.
