Missing Student -- ISU ALERT

everyone who frequents stomping grounds vigorously disagrees with you. don't you know that cell phones are just another method for the government and the corporations to control your mind? :jimlad:

"don't let the corporations control your mind bra!" Wooo!!

Seriously, I hope they find this kid and that he is alright. My thoughts go out to the family-

It appears that he was a very engaged and participatory student - can't believe any of his friends in class wouldn't be concerned after he wasn't in class all week.
WTF

I'm not sure I'd think twice if the guys I knew in my classes didn't show up for a week. I'd probably just guess there was a death in their family or something...I sure as hell wouldn't report it to police.

YA, I agree with you on this one... I skipped all my classes wed. thurs. and friday last week and no one ever noticed. But if it was one of my close friends then ya... I would get concerned after a couple of misses.

I think if he was a friend of mine, I would call him and ask what's up. But I'm a few years older than you, it might be a different world now.
A classmate of his on the news said that when he didn't answer during roll call in class last week, the classmate just assumed he was playing video games and wasn't listening. Doesn't anyone look around anymore?

There's a difference between a friend and a guy you know in class. I don't know about you, but I never kept tabs on simple acquaintances that happened to be in the same class as me.

edit: I guess if your point is that someone should have noticed his disappearance sooner than a week, I would agree.

I agree here. I've got a bunch of people I know from classes, but if they disappeared, I'm not sure I'd notice. Some of my closest friends I'd notice after a day or two if they weren't responding to things on Facebook or text or e-mail.

Um, I don't think so. Remember a couple years ago when a couple people froze to death in eastern Nebraska (I think - or was it far W IA?) when their vehicle (snowmobiles?) got stuck and they walked. They ended up at an gravel pit with working cell phones, but couldn't describe the location well enough to be found in time. At that time it got a bit of flash in the media that it turns out the system for tracking cell phones pretty much doesn't exist amongst law enforcement agencies, yet most everyone in the public believed it was possible.

When I had my rollover accident last month I was describing my location to the dispatcher and he stopped me. Then said "It's ok, I'm triangulating your location now..." and they found me just fine. It probably depends on the agency that you are trying to get emergency services through. Polk County has a bit more money than most, so they probably have it set up to work well with the rough GPS-type data that the cell phones can provide.

I wonder if they'll search all the water areas around Ames, such as Ada Hayden on the North side.

Just FYI....I dont know what for sure it means...but,
my brother-in-law is Discrict Admin. with the DCI.
He told us tonight that the FBI will-or-has been called in.

Just passing on the only credible info I have.
We will continue to pray for him and his family.

Did a thread on a missing student really turn into hippy-bashing? Weird.:smile:

You may not know, but for discussions sake, is this something that would typically happen, or is it a sign theyve gotten some lead that would make them want to bring in fbi assistance?

I dont know but...... think its something they do when they run out of clues
locally and want to make it a nation wide search.
The FBI has has long legs and resources.Every bit helps.

Most likely the FBI is being called in because they have searched locally as best they can, from here on ISU Police is limited to in what they can do. There is a reason why the FBI handles missing persons.

FYI, with the Bolanos case, the FBI was called for that as well just before they found him.

Doesn't the FBI only handle missing persons cases when they suspect that the circumstances involving that person's disappearance has to do with crossing state lines or large areas or a case of serial disappearances? I didn't think they handle local individual instances. I mean, lots of people go missing everyday. They don't handle them all. There has to be something they aren't telling us about all of this.

That is exactly what I was thinking.

Looks like it may simply mean they have reasonable concern for his safety. Which would be in line with the way they've gone about the whole investigation. They also might have reason to believe it was involuntary.

NCIC MISSING PERSON FILE

The National Crime Information Center’s (NCIC’s) Missing Person File was implemented in 1975. Records in the Missing Person File are retained indefinitely, until the individual is located or the record is canceled by the entering agency. The Missing Person File contains records for missing who:

-have a proven physical or mental disability (Disability—EMD);

-are missing under circumstances indicating that they may be in physical danger (Endangered—EME);

-are missing after a catastrophe (Catastrophe Victim—EMV);

-are missing under circumstances indicating their disappearance may not have been voluntary (Involuntary—EMI);

-are under the age of 21 and do not meet the above criteria (Juvenile—EMJ); or

-are 21 and older and do not meet any of the above criteria but for whom there is a reasonable concern for their safety (Other—EMO).

All this is telling us what the criteria is to be listed as a missing person and go into the registry. It doesn't indicate what the circumstances are for the FBI getting involved. The above is the "definition" of a missing person.
