Missing Student -- ISU ALERT

I would assume by now they have searched his room...

Yes, they searched every room in Buchanan last night.

This morning my professor said they called all of the design professors over the weekend to see if they'd seen/knew anything, she started tearing up while talking about it.

I'm praying he's found alive and safe, but if the worst case scenario is what happened... I just hope they find out sooner rather than later so his friends and family can have some peace of mind. I can't imagine how hard this must be on everyone close to him

maybe im wrong but my understanding is that you can track a cell phone even when its off because of the small battery in the phone that keeps the clock moving. i think ive heard that before....

I'm sure if that is possible, they have tried to do it.

I don't think you need to keep it on just to track the time, since it could just as easily ask what time it is from the network the next time it's turned on

they can triangulate the signal!

I don't believe that's true. My understanding is that the clock is like the clock on your computer- you don't necessarily need to be on a network or have the computer turned on to keep the clock ticking accurately.

Um, I don't think so. Remember a couple years ago when a couple people froze to death in eastern Nebraska (I think - or was it far W IA?) when their vehicle (snowmobiles?) got stuck and they walked. They ended up at an gravel pit with working cell phones, but couldn't describe the location well enough to be found in time. At that time it got a bit of flash in the media that it turns out the system for tracking cell phones pretty much doesn't exist amongst law enforcement agencies, yet most everyone in the public believed it was possible.

You wouldn't think it would be that hard to develop the technology and start incorporating it in cell phones.

I seriously think when I become a parent I want my kid to have a cell phone or a locator device somewhere on them.

It's just in Nebraska where they have trouble...

everyone who frequents stomping grounds vigorously disagrees with you. don't you know that cell phones are just another method for the government and the corporations to control your mind? :jimlad:

I think the ability to track depends on the area where the person is. I remember last year reading about how Cedar Rapids was getting an upgraded 911 system that allows for better location of cell phones for E911 calls. I would imagine that most large cities have this technology.

Iowa agencies can track phones. Iowa passed a law a few years ago to set up tracking on Cell phones. I know ISU has used this technology for several missing persons.

What didn't help was that that couple that froze to death was also high on meth and in describing their location to 911 they said people were speaking spanish (the people were cows) and they were hanging things in the trees........

Dateline or 20/20 did a show about this a few years ago.

Not sure about when they're turned off, but if you have a semi-new cellphone (less then 2-3 years old) it can definitely be tracked by emergency services. For example, if you dial 911 on most new phones it automatically starts acting as a beacon to any agency that has the E911 service and you have to manually turn it off.

I'm fairly sure you can't turn it off for 911
