Michigan State vs. Iowa

Are you afraid of some civil discussion?
For weeks and weeks, the ISU fan base has tried to engage in serious discussion regarding:

1. Iowa's SOS
2. Iowa not playing Michigan, MSU, and OSU during the regular season.
3. The fact that in the head to head Iowa was barely better than ISU.

All the responses we got from the Hawk fanbase was "10-0!", "11-0!", "12-0!". NOW you guys want a serious discussion?! Here's my response:

12-

I still don't understand how anybody in their right mind can try to ridicule a 12-1 rose bowl team.

Crazy to me.

Not ridiculing the team, rather ridiculing the fan base.
Plus, remember all who were diving off the plank of the USS Iowa Hawkeyes before the beginning of the season. One of my co-workers wrote a "Hawkeye love letter" to Keith Murphy - in it he admitted his desire for Kirk to be fired. It would have been interesting had the USS Freerentz had to play MSU, Mich and OSU this year. Would the fans be singing his praises had they lost all 3 of those games? We'll never know as long as the Hoks are in the West and avoid playing the heavyweights.

Show me one hawk fan (other than breck) that would prefer anything other than a playoff.

There's still nothing wrong with being excited about the rose bowl.

The fact that breck exists makes it all but certain there are more Hawk fans, probably old, who are glad Iowa ended up in the Rose Bowl instead of the Cotton or the Orange because it's the grandaddy of them all.

Agree there's nothing wrong with being excited about the Rose though, it's a great consolation prize. I think it's silly to suggest that life in Iowa world is all peaches and cream today after being really close - much closer than most people thought - to being one of 4 teams in the country to play for a national championship though. It's OK, you can be disappointed about that and still happy about the 5th place game. Don't know why Iowa fans here in particular are so defensive about not showing any sadness/disappointment/etc. for losing the biggest game in Iowa football history.

Basketball is not the same beast so I can't really draw an exact comparison but let's say if Iowa State went to Phog Allen on the last Saturday of the season tied with KU and lost that game to give the Jayhawks their 12th straight conference title... I would be disappointed but also excited if ISU got a 2 seed in the big dance. Like I said, imperfect analogy but still.

I'm certainly very disappointed about last night. Honestly, getting to sleep after that game was a real challenge. It was so close I could almost taste it, and the image of Scott reaching out for the goal line is going to haunt me for a very long time. In terms of pain caused, the end of that game is right up there with Game 6. And I'm still sticking pins and needles into my Alex Gonzalez voodoo doll.

That said, I'm also still VERY excited to see the Hawks play in the Rose Bowl. I'd have been pretty pumped for a matchup with Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, but playing Christian McCaffrey in the Rose Bowl...that's going to be a stellar game.
