MESS named OC

Agree and disagree. Bleil and Mess have done a good job all things considered. As far as Herman, why would you run an offense (passing game) predicated on beating people in congested space with the least athletic offense?

At times we were young, at others not so much. 3 upperclassmen starting Olinemen, Jr QB, top 4 WR upperclassmen, top 2 TEs upperclassmen. That is 8 out 0f 11 starters being upperclassmen, only two of which being new starters (Hammer and Jantz).

The Cyclone optimist in me believes we could see some improvement even if Herman was here, maybe even back to where McFarland had the offense with a sophomore QB in AA, sophomore RB in ARob, freshman KO, sophomore Hicks, true freshman Haughton, true freshman Darks, etc..

Lenz and Gary had more yards per target (8.95, 8.97 respectively) than Reynolds (7.72). Over a yard difference in fact. Reynolds had more yards per catch than anyone else, but he dropped so many (52% incompletion rate on balls thrown to him!!!) that we would have seen greater overall production by throwing to him less.

Horne was our fourth best YpT at 6.84.

Like I said, we're going to miss his physicality.

If we're consistently getting up and down the field and not killing drives with drops of routine catches, we're going to have more scoring opportunities.

It's a double edged sword. We're going to miss the things he did well, and by the same token we're not going to miss the things he didn't do well.

I don't know. The staff seemed pretty high on Bundrage this summer, to the point that they almost burned his redshirt and played him the beginning of the season. He has pretty good height and potential. Luckily he didn't play and hopefully will be more physically mature and ready to play next season. He may not immediately be better than Darks and Money, but he coube be eventually.

Another off season of work with a WR coach other than Luke Wells and the whole WR corps might be better next year. That's one of the reasons I am anxious to see who is brought in as the new WR coach. Maybe he will have some new ideas to improve the passing game and routes by the WRs.

I have a teacher at my high school who played for Messingham when he coached at Upper Iowa and he said that he would do anything for him. Seems like the kind of coach Iowa State needs.

The big question is whether 3-star recruits from California, Texas, and Florida will do anything for him. Did they this year?

I guess that is yet to be seen. How he is accepted by lower-level football players versus BCS players could vary greatly. I just felt a lot better about this hire after hearing about how a former player felt about him

We should be able to get a good indication of the reaction of players next year if we look at the reaction of players to him this year. All I know about him is based on what I've read on CF (which means that I'm very confused and trying to sort it out).

1. Not sure how many games you watch, but I've seen more short passes to wide open guys just be completely missed, and that has nothing to do with scheme.

2. Really hope you're joking here. But then again you were probably one of the same guys telling me Knott and Klein wouldn't be upgrades because they didn't start the year before too. Happens every single year on every single team where you lose a senior and someone steps up even better the next year even though they were on the team the year before.

Some of the players on twitter seemed real jacked about it.

Your kind of cherry picking certain lineups here (also Jarvis West was in our top 4 for WR for sure). Just take a look at what we were putting on the field, especially late in the year, that talented RSFr class was all over the two deep mixed with a few Sophs on the OL. West, Woody, White, Duck, JB..our skill set as well as OL heavily leaned on underclassman. As for the WR's in the program I think the guys we have redshirting along with this class coming in is the most talent we've seen at WR is a long time. Point being, no matter how you slice it the future of our Offense looks much better than it did only 1-2 years ago. More than enough to build a solid Big 12 Offense around if they work hard and run a simple and fundemental skeme.

I've seen those too, but this is anecdotal. I've also seen a number of missed passes thrown to a receiver in traffic. Those passes were defended, or the QB had to try and pinpoint the throw around a couple of defenders and missed.

No doubt the recievers need to improve, but the scheme also needs to create more space and make easier plays for the QB and receivers. Not every school has an Andrew Luck who can make NFL-caliber throws to well-covered receivers.

Really beating a dead horse on this one. CPR hired Herman because he wanted a god damn spread offense. He decided it was best for the future of ISU to take our lumps while we were already a bad team and transition to an offense he thought would be best for the future. He thought it was best for the new guys he recruited to just learn one offense, instead of learning a scheme they aren't fit for then when they are the upperclassemen having to learn a whole new one again. The type of players we have been recruiting are about the opposite of the type we had been bringing in before CPR got here.
 
Quit basing your opinion of this offense on players recruited for a completely different offense. Wait until players who were recruited for and fit this offense are the ones running it.

In the defense of the posters, I am pretty sure every type of system wants their receivers to be able to catch the ball.

The accuracy and catching isn't what I was talking about Lol, as they would have the same problem in any scheme. But it will be interesting to see this offense run without the two guys dropping it the most. Hopefully Barnett or Jantz will have improved accuracy their second year starting which isn't at all unheard of.
