McDermott under contract until 2015?

I am very disappointed in our media. They reported this not long ago:

Pollard said McDermott, in the third year of a six-year contract, would likely not see a contract extension after the season because “there’s no need to extend it right now,â€￾ but said he fully supported McDermott.

Source: MEN'S BASKETBALL: Support amidst struggles

What Pollard failed to say is that there is no need to extend it right now because it is actually the third year of a 9 year contract. Of course he isn't going to announce a bungled move on his part, but why doesn't our media call him on it?

You have a solid point. Tell the fans how it is instead of avoiding talk of these hidden contract extensions as long as possible.

At least he sees we aren't athletic enough to compete for 40 minutes. You can really see he is trying to fix that in his upcoming classes as well.

Wow...very sobering news.

Personally, in general I think these coaching contracts should be shorter in length and incentive laden with great rewards for great results. I don't mind seeing a guy get a bunch of dough for great performance but I hate seeing a guy get a bunch of dough for poor performance.

A lot of people seem to think GM is a great guy. I don't know him...maybe he is. If he has another year next year like this present one...a great guy would resign. We all know that won't happen...BECAUSE THIS IS BIG BUSINESS.

Since this is big business, those of you that continue to "believe" in GM even though the concrete results are quite clear that he is not getting the job done...well, you need to wake up and smell the coffee and quit basing your thoughts on nothing but your emotions...look at the facts people!!

I don't base much on emotion. Maybe it would help you to check your emotions at the door.

I wonder what would have happened if Duke fired Coach K after his first 3 years, which were horrible. My god, people don't have any patience today.

No kidding.

The extension reflects that the situation was much worse than Mac's detractors will ever want to admit, and that things were going to get ugly here.

Mac got the ship stabilized, and the players are coming in to make the progress we all want to see. It's going to be all right.

Coach K had Duke in the NCAA in his 4th year. Let's see if McD can do the same.

All of you comparing Greg to Coach K had better be prepared to use the same stats in the coming years. Can't use them on one hand, and not on the other.

I don't think the point is to say McD will be winning national championships but rather that past results are not always indicative of future results.

****The mandatory Coach K reference!!!*****

No one seems to know why this is a relavant reference.....or why Duke's situation 30 years ago was in anyway similar to ours, but somehow I knew this would come up in this discussion.

Thats fine, I expect the NCAA's next year, especially if Brackins comes back. I realize he has a lot of work to do to turn this thing around but unlike other people, I am not calling for his head after only 3 years.

I think the whole idea is that his start was difficult as well, not to mention that the situation was the same or anyway similar. In that sense, it makes sense to mention that a pretty good coach got off to a pretty rocky start.

When I heard this news on KXnO this morning my heart just sank. I can't bear to watch us play right now, I really hope it gets better than this the next six freaking years. The first thing that popped into my mind was that it might help with recruiting, and so I wondered out loud what the buyout provisions would be for such a long-term increase.....and I was not pleasantly surprised by the answer. This seems like a risky move at best.

The reason for all of this player turnover is because of McDermott. That's why everyone has left. It's why West left, it's why Taggart left, it's why Degand left, it's why Carr left, etc.

When Huggins left K-State, Beasley didn't follow him to West Virginia because K-State had a coach that was able to keep Beasley around. Players are leaving because they don't like McDermott because he runs a sluggish offense. I am so sick of everyone saying that this player turnover is not McDermott's fault when it clearly is.

Having said that, if McDermott is around until 2015, this program is in the cellar until 2018...Great!

Let's not let facts get in the way of trying to make a point! :chatterbox:

Carr was already off the team. He didn't finish the season with Morgan.

Beasley had a very strong tie to Kansas State's assistant. Why do you think they hired Martin and kept hill?

Taggart was also looking at leaving early

I see...we use Coach K's record when it helps our argument, and then dismiss it when it doesn't help us.

Now I understand!

That's one version of paying attention.

I don't think he made a 100% comparison. He only pointed out that Coach K got off to a rough start.

Good job on the reading comprehension there. Or did you just read what you wanted to read there?

So if we struggle next year, is there an example of a great coach who struggled in his first four years that people will talk about? (sorry, a little humor...I couldn't resist)
