taz, good to see you again. I sort of skipped the first 3 pages of the thread since it looks like a lot of flaming and raging (umad, mikem?). Just gonna start with here on page 4.
You are desperately hanging on to the City Boyz incidents, aren't you? You love the Satterfield/Everson incident, huh? To continue to bring it up is intriguing. Let us get down to it.. we had some bad characters in that era who made some bad decisions. Those players were removed from the team and some continued to make bad decisions afterwards and some faded away. In the large part that pretty much sums it up, right? And I must point out there is nothing deflecting in that paragraph, there clearly was a problem with those players.
So we'll proceed to the article in question. 15 of the cases were alcohol related, one was disorderly conduct and 2 were possession charges. The DJK situation is an absolute joke of a situation, he brought it on himself, and he deserved way more in the legal area than he got. He was also removed from the team after this incident. Adam Robinson was already on suspension and that suspension became indefinite after his encounter. 2 possession charges, 2 departures.. can you say that ISU's results have been the same?
The disorderly conduct charge is touchy as well. Whether you believe innocent or not, the disorderly charge is what came of it. It was a very stupid decision and is in no way related to any other incident that has/had occured.
To the meat of the subject, the alcohol related charges. To try to slam KF on the subject is laughable. Attempt to make the argument with a straight face that this is not a university issue but purely a football program issue. The university is known for its drinking, parties, bar scene, what have you. Like it or not, admit it or not, the party scenes at UofI and ISU are different. Does this deflect guilt from the program? Not necessarily because the players (need to) understand A) you're in the spotlight B) you need to make better decisions. My point rests being that this is also a university issue which is not going to go away anytime soon. I feel like, for the most part, KF does what he can.
If Iowa were to begin having problems again, such as the City Boyz incident, or another DJK incident.. then yes, bring out the "WTF" statements.
While I have the floor, also going to ask if you truly feel there is not a double standard for ISU and UofI.. what if it was Iowa that was bringing in the players that ISU bball is bringing in?
I hang onto the rape issue because it was a defining moment for ferentz. How he handled it makes him a POS in my book. By most accounts, he knew what went on and suspended the two but did not dismiss them. Footballl players continued to harass the girl and nothing was done. He had players move back into the room. And imo what really defines him is he gave them good recommendations. He told Lou Tepper that he would take satterfield back if he could. Tepper took that to mean KF couldn't because of bad pub. That is disgusting.
Rape is a disgusting crime that will hang with that young lady forever. FOREVER. It doesn't go away when the players transfer. Those two scumbags got off without even being on the sexual predator list mostly due to the universsity mishandling the case. Yet, kf treated the incident like a common misdemeanor. That shows extremely low morals and pretty crappy character.
I could care less about the "city boyz." Again, I just point out that iowa has more arrests than the article states. Just because the criminals that committed worse crimes ar no longer on the team it doesn't erase the fact they committed them at iowa while they are members of the team and they were handled poorly at best. Since then you have had more drug arrests and another assault. The way Clayborn's was handled is funny. What did he have to do run stairs. Berryman got a year in jail for punching a guy and taking his $90 cell phone. BTW- Berryman should have never been allowed back...he is a POS. I stated that at the time as well.
The alcohol things don't bother me much at all. What bothers me is hok fans dismissing them as being normal. They aren't normal. Even if you only count alcohol related offenses, hok football players are being arrested at a higher rate than normal iowa students. People claim they are targets but that is BS. When you get naked, destroy public property, urinate in public, pick a fight with an off duty cop, etc you are drawing attention to yourself. When that happens you will get arrested. Even in ames...ask Aaron Moore
Not sure if you read keeler's column today but he blames it on the "party atmosphere" and points to Florida St, Florida, Wisconsin, Miami, and Penn St as being rated top party schools then shows that they are also on the arrest list. Thing is iowa has twice as many arrests as all of those schools except PSU. So even when compared to other party schools, iowa has an inordinate amount of arrests.
No double standard as far as MBB goes. ISU fans don't even agree on bringing the tranfers in. There were heated debates on every Cyclone message board about bringing in White, Allen and Lucious. White is the only one with legal issues and Freddy researched that hard. JP didn't agree with it at first but through a thorough background/interview process signed off . The fanbase is probable split 60% yes, 40% no on taking those transfers at the time of the transfers. Fans will support them now that they are clones but if one of them slips up, you will see plenty saying "I told you so.". I like to look at Chris Colvin as a prime example. iowa is recruiting him. kid was a cancer in the lockerroom and I would not like him back at ISU but if he has changed and iowa wants him then more power to them and him.
As i stated earlier in this thread... even if you count ISU's basketball players and football players, they have only had 8 arrests(3 of which charges were dropped completely) in the last four years. 3 alcohol related, 3 drug related(charges were dropped), 1 misdeamenor shoplifting and one credit card theft. iowa had 24 from football alone. Even if you remove the alcohol offenses from iowa, they still beat ISU.
Keep in mind that 3 of ISU's arrest were late signees do to a coaching change. Means the staff had less time to evaluate character of the players.
