I'd call that the most surprisingly personal Marvel movie yet.
I was kidding when people asked if the seats next to us were open: "Are you on Team Cap?"
One guy said "Team Iron Man." I mentioned that he was in the wrong section, but we were all just goofing around. After the movie, both sides had a real point. They didn't make this one easy.
Saw it tonight as well. Definitely one of those movies of such high-quality that I could easily see it a 2nd time in theaters.
Great breakdown. I would add more to it but I really don't want to spoil anything. I was really surprised how many open seats there were last night. I went to the 3D showing and it wasn't even half full. The standard screen looked pretty full but this is a movie I thought was worth 3D.Here is my somewhat lengthy final review of the film and while I’m going to try really hard to not spoil anything, just by the sheer amount of the film I’m going to talk about might, it be somewhat spoilery in itself, so I guess maybe read with slight caution.
Here goes. Overall, I absolutely loved the movie, but that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t without fault either. Let’s start with what I did like. I think probably everyone will agree that probably the best part of this movie was Spider-Man, even though he wasn’t in it a ton. While he wasn’t one of the main characters in the film, I’m not sure that anybody could have cast or introduced Spider-Man in a better way than the Russo Bros did in this film. I loved everything about him, how they handled the introduction, how Tom Holland fits Spider-Man to a “T”, and how his characterization is handled. This “IS” Spider-Man. If anything, I went away wanting more, but isn’t that the point right? As for my second favorite part of the movie, I’ve got to go with Black Panther. This is just another character that the Russo Bros introduced perfectly and the dude is just “BA”. Don’t know any other way to put it. In a movie full of sheer heavyweights like Captain America and Iron Man, I’d claim it is something to say that the new characters stole the show away from those guys, and that isn’t a slight at all to the old characters. Maybe one of the best parts of this movie is how there was somewhat a great passing of the torch from the old generation of characters to the new generation. On a side note, did anyone else think Rhodey looked like he has aged a TON since we last saw him and even to lesser extent, RDJ too? I know. Both are getting up there in age, which makes what I just said even more important. As for the storytelling in the movie, I loved most of it. There is weight to the story, there is drama, there is comedy, there is amazing action, and there is fun. I also don’t think I’ve seen any director handle so many characters in one movie so well, where each one had their chance to shine in their own little way, and that balancing act is HARD to do. Back to the action I talked about, I’m not sure that anyone can argue that any of the MCU movies so far tops this movie in action sequences. There is one in particular that is hands down, my new favorite MCU action sequence. The Russo Bros obviously know how to handle good action sequences after doing this movie as well as The Winter Soldier. They also know how to balance a ton of characters well. Both of these things are key elements for their future “Infinity Wars” movies and definitely reaffirm that those futures movies are in good hands. Lastly, I loved how this movie characterized the two different sides in a way where it truly was hard to choose sides in this thing as both sides presented valid points behind them. In fact, throughout the movie, I kept finding myself switching sides, which makes things fun and deep at the same time. While some of this stuff is political. Like many things, there are pluses and minuses to both opinions which adds depth to stupid surface level viewings of things.
Moving on to a few of the things I didn’t like about the movie, the biggest of which was probably the ending to be honest. I thought the build-up was amazing, but found myself actually slightly disappointed in the payoff. I loved that there were a few twists in the movie, but I’m not sure that I loved what the twists were. Was the ending bad? No, but I can’t say that it was great. I’ll stop here on that front to avoid spoiling anything more. Secondly, believe it or not, I actually found myself a little bored at the beginning of the movie too, so it took me a little while to get into things. Maybe that is my own fault because I’ve hyped this up too much in my mind and watched too many trailers and stuff. Regardless, it wasn’t until about 20 minutes in until I was all-in to this thing.
All said and done, I did love this movie and still, a day later, think that this is now my new favorite MCU movie yet. However, my overall ranking of this film did change some throughout. Like I said above, it started out a bit slow and didn’t start as my favorite. Then, through the buildup, it soured to a level of liking wwaaayyy above the others, only to drift much closer to the top of the pack towards the end. Therefore, halfway through the movie, I would say “best MCU movie Eva” by far, but at the end, I’d rank it only slightly ahead of movies like “The Winter Soldier”, “The Avengers”, “Iron Man”, and “Guardians of the Galaxy”. Truthfully, I thought some of those of those other movies, particularly “The Winter Soldier” had better endings. Regardless, great movie that everyone should see and it gets two thumbs up in my book.
