Mark Mangino

bump. Put me in the Pro-Mangino camp; assuming he'd want to come here. I think Iowa State would be a great stop in the relaunching of his career. Can you deny his offensive wizardry? He knows what it takes to move the ball in the Big XII- without 5 star talent. I'm tired of sucking. Let him light it up for a few years. My biggest fear is that he'd eventually return to Kansas and make them relevant again. If you're worried about having to watch him waddle on the sideline, don't be. I'd think he'd most likely be calling shots from the booth. If that means a bigger press box, I say, "Woo-hoo!"

This is my biggest fear as well. There are probably already plenty of KU fans that want him back. If he comes here and has success, I could actually see them hiring him back.
 
It would work for me. I am guessing he might get a head coaching gig if it works out. If we can afford it, I would be a fan of MM as OC and a separate qb coach. I would be willing to give Sage a go at that.

Wouldn't mind seeing Mangino if we hire Sage. Some people have said one problem with Mangino is that he may use ISU as a stepping stone back to a HC job and won't stick around long. But if you hire Sage on as a QB coach and let him get some coaching experience and learn under Mangino then hand the reins off to Sage when Mangino leaves sounds just fine to me.
 
This is the guy we need, he took Kansas to a bcs bowl. He is an offensive mastermind. All his negatives will be kept in check by CPR. This would be a dream hire. In this country we believe in second chances and this guys will fit into the CPR program and will make our offense much better

The team that fired him a year after their best season ever would then ask him to come back? That makes a ton of sense.
 
I don't know if he'd be my first choice, but I believe strongly that we would improve under him. He knows the conference really well and knows how to do more with less, which is something we sorely need. His "player intimidation" was very overblown in the media. The Kansas fan base was embarrassed by his media gaffes, obese appearance, wasn't great on the alumni rubber chicken circuit, and how much he alienated the media. The tea-sipper money alumni couldn't stand the guy. I think Kansas thought they had arrived well enough to replace him and stay at a .500+ level. They were just off a major renovation to the stadium complex (I think it was a $30 million upgrade). The media in Kansas City hated him, and he always seemed to be complaining about something, life in Skeletor's shadow I suspect. Anyway, without the media spotlight and headcoaching pressure, I think he would be just fine with the players.

He would be on my list of ten, maybe even my list of five. We could do (and have done) a lot worse than him under the OC headset.

We NEED to hire someone that sees ISU as a stepping stone, in my opinion. That means they are an excellent coach. If they get hired away as a HC, that usually* (see Chizik) means they are doing well. If and when he'd get hired away, reload with another guy of the same stature. If we hire someone who is content to be OC at Iowa State long term, we probably made the wrong hire.

Hindsight, man. At their level of desperation, would anyone really be surprised? I think the real question would be: would Mangino want to go back to Kansas? Based on the above article posted by TXCyclones, it doesn't sound like he's very bitter.

As mentioned by previous posters, my dream hire would include Sage (or Seneca) as QB coach.
 
I'm sure Mangino would see the ISU OC gig as a stepping stone, but he still has enough baggage that he'd need to have some big seasons here before getting offered a much better gig.

So, what specifically did Mangino do with Kansas that Messingham didn't do with ISU that made him so effective?

Different recruiting? Different practice techniques? Different sets? Different play-calling? Different team meals?

Agree 100%. The constant should be PR and if he hires guys looking to make a splash to get to somewhere else so be it. The only person it has to be a destination job for is the HC.

Also, if Paul hires Mangino I hope there's a clause in the contract about ****ty towels. No ****ty towels.
