Mark Mangino

Besides the work he did at KU, he was also at KSU with Snyder from 1991 - 1998 (Recruiting Coordinator/Running Game Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach when they were winning conference titles and a national power) and at OU with Stoops from 1999 - 2001 (Assistant Head Coach/OC/Offensive Line Coach when they rebuilt to become conference champs and WON and national title).

You want someone who can find talent? He's has been and currently is a recruiting coordinator.

You want someone who knows offense? He's consistently been part of the best offenses in college football over the past 20 years.

The guy has lost 125 pounds.

By all accounts, he's a good guy. He apparently doesn't have the stress-handling capability to be a head coach, but we don't need a head coach. We need somebody to coach QBs and run an offense.
 
No. I think there'd be too many off the field or in the locker room problems. Kinda analogous to the "If you have 2 quarterbacks, you have no quarterback" thing.

Maybe if it's a training type deal for a guy like Sage. have him as QB coach and Mangino's apprentice of sorts. Maybe :unsure:

If you're looking to repair your resume, improve your stock, and eventually move onto another major head coaching job, I'd like to think he'd be careful not to undermine Rhoads' authority or seriously challenge him in any way. Even if he hasn't learned his lesson, I think it's worth the risk for Paul & this program.

I can't get inside Mangino's head so I don't know his level of contentment with the Youngstown job...maybe he love's it? But the ISU job seems like something he could sink his teeth into (I really tried hard not to type that). He's succeeded at KSU and KU so he's clearly comfortable with the B12 north schools. Honestly, who else is as well versed in B12N football than MM besides Snyder. It would be a real boone to the ISU program to get a guy on staff with so much insight to three other B12 programs. Kind of like when Ferentz hired Norm Parker at Iowa.

He had his chance at Kansas. He'd be pushing 60 on the next round of head coaching jobs, plus he's a tough PR sell for a head coach. He's done at the head coaching level. I think he's going to be an OC for someone down the line, after a three year vacation on KU's dime, and be pretty content with that.
 
I would be shocked if he was the hire. I think he would be a very good choice but it would be a surprise none the less.

Can someone explain to me why he WOULDN'T fit in here?

Please, Paul, give him an interview. Then decide if he fits. He's the one of best in the business.
 
I love the idea of having Sage as QB or RB coach and grooming him to be OC (after mangino leaves)

A guy can dream.

All you just told me is Mangino took advantage opportunity presented, while ISU ****** down their leg with it.

KU has no football support, its a hoop school, the fact he did so well there is nothing short of amazing.

Right. His 2009 Kansas team winning the first 5 games and then losing the next 7 games in a row was nothing short of amazing. His winless record against Texas and Oklahoma was nothing short of amazing and his 4-20 record against the Big 12 South was nothing short of amazing.

In 2005 with OU and Texas on the schedule they went 8-5. They had a rebuilding year in 2006, going 6-6 without playing OU or Texas. 2007 was their big year going 12-1, again without OU and Texas as you pointed out. In 2008 they went 8-5 with OU and Texas back on the schedule.

Since Mangino left they've gone 5-7, 3-9, 2-10, 1-11 and 3-9.

After the 5-7 season of 2010 they have played in the new Big 12 where you do not have divisions and play everyone in the conference.

The biggest red flag I see is the 2009 season where they won the first five games and lost the last seven games. Mangino had lost the team and they weren't playing for him. That speaks volumes. Too many other options out there to take on Mangino's baggage.
