Manning fired yet?

Honest question - how is Manning going to learn? Perhaps some reflection and reviewing your own tendencies helps, but it seems as though those that really grow in the position are being mentored by an experienced head coach. I love CMC, but I'm not sure he can help much there. I really hope I'm wrong.

Do you think coaches don’t talk and work with other coaches? Our staff went to Clemson to learn from their coaches a few years back, and their defensive coaches came to Ames to learn from Heacock.

I do recall Clemson coming to learn more about the defense...didn't hear that we had visited them, but makes sense we would have gone there.

CMC on a program wide level needs to emphasize stronger details in general.

It will be interesting to see what next September looks like.

I hesitate to mix it up in this thread, but this is a point I would love to hear the football minds (Jay, Jeff) break down.

There seems to be a noticeable discrepancy between what Campbell is preaching and what the team is executing when it comes to "details" and "margins." Why is that? It's clearly important to this staff, but the message and methods don't seem to be resonating with the players.

It reminds me of basketball where Prohm is always preaching toughness, but they can’t seem to instill it in practice. They’ve identified a problem, which is great, but they haven’t quite figured out how to address it.

Another factor in the details is we actually haven’t been horrendous as a whole this year but they all have been at crucial points. Addressing this though is the most important think I think.

I know while I was a little, uhm, caught up in the frustration and had my blood thinned a bit I was on the “fire Manning” bandwagon. That was more frustration than anything. There was general disapproval of doing 4th and less than a yard from the shotgun by many. That’s more where my angst came from. In hindsight, we have to realize the HC can override any play call and didn’t all year in those situations. So that is obviously a staff philosophy. I believe Manning brings some really good things to our offensive room and I also believe there will be some adjustments in the off season. At least I hope there are. I do trust our HC and that’s all I need.

I get frustrated with manning being too cute at times, but my guess is he is trying to compensate for some real problems on the o line. Lot of the issues we had go away with a better o line.

All year we just had real problems in short yardage situations, at times you have to be able to get two yards when the defense knows you are going to run, and we haven’t been able to do that for a few years.

Just need better o line play. It’s the one group that Campbell hasn’t made significant upgrades.

I’m not totally disagreeing, but there are some parts of details and margins where we’ve drastically improved as well, like being one of the least penalized teams in the country, and being one of the teams with the fewest amount of three and outs.

Not everything can be fixed over night, but I do think we’re making good progress to where he wants to be.

Thats not how it works. That being said I doubt Manning goes anywhere.

That’s probably exactly how it works with these two guys.

Plus, Campbell is the HC and probably has a ton of input on game day. If things were not good enough for him Manning would be fired. He’s not fired, so Campbell is fine with the offense.

This stuff drives me crazy. It’s the same as Iowa fans ripping Ferentz’ OC’s. Nothing happens that these guys don’t have their fingers in.

They did last night like crazy.

Iowa threw deep WAY more than us all season. I guess they just have the QB and WRs to do it, but we don't?

Nobody has yet to explain why we don't have a RB screen play.... or a simple dump off outlet for Purdy to throw to when he's in trouble. This is basic simple stuff that Manning just can't seem to design.
On Iowa’s playcalling: Nate Stanley has a pretty good arm. He has murdering USC. And he steps into his throws. I cannot count how many times Purdy threw while he was still back peddling. Dude, you’re not Patrick Mahomes. Step into it!

On Manning designing plays: football is a copycat sport. You don’t have to design plays yourself. Copy a good offense and playbook from the thousands of hours of game film out there. Clemson runs our 3-3-5 defense. Did they design it? Nope. They literally came to Ames and copied it.

Baylor didn’t even have to come to Ames to copy our defense, either.

Unfortunately, it seems like every time we do get a penalty it is in a crucial moment either in the red zone or turning a short yardage situation into a long yardage one.
