Lipsey Shoutout

An amazing PG stat:

Lipsey has a 2.6 Assist : TO ratio, which is awesome for a FR

But that stat has always seemed weird to me - assists aren't the opposite of turnovers, steals are. Lipsey also has a "positive" Steal:Turnover ratio - 24 vs 22

Two other FR PGs have done that - Monte (46/28) and Haliburton (54/28). Monte went on to achieve that feat all 4 years, while Haliburton just missed his (ill-fated) SO year.

The biggest difference being that both Monte and Hali played behind established PGs their FR years, where Tamin is the main guy. But it's amazing company for him to be in. (of course, both Monte and Hali shot >40% from 3 their FR years as well)
Amazing it’s that high. Monte was surrounded by more consistent shooters, although Georges was also dishing a lot of assists.

By the time Lipsey is an upperclassmen his floater and ability to finish at the rim will be elite. You pair that with Momcilovic who is an elite shooter and scorer that pick and pop game at the top of the circle is going to be next level.

I have visions of Momcilovic catching the ball on the elbow and playing high/low game with a 7'1" center in Rock as well.

Space the floor with Hamilton and Indrusaitis as elite shooters in the corner.

Similar stat line in some regards. Big difference it’s what I eluded to earlier which is the 3 point shooting. Monte made more per game as a freshman then Lipsey is attempting and happened to have his best shooting year percentage wise at just north of 40%.

Biggest difference was that Monte was playing a different position. Kane was running point and Monte was more of a spot up shooter. Obviously, Lipsey has a long ways to go to be any kind of consistent shooter. And it is probably going to lead to some losses when teams figure out that they don't need to guard him at all. I feel like he'll put the work in, though. If he can be a 40% shooter when he's wide open and then develop a floater, he's going to be maybe our best PG ever and that's saying something.

Agree on the different positions. Lipsey/Holmes (when on the floor together) is very different than Kane/Morris where - to your point - Monte was playing off the ball a lot and letting Kane manage a lot of the ball handling duties.

I think we’re both saying the same thing which is if Lipsey could shoot 35-40 percent from deep on several attempts per game we’re talking about an elite college point guard.

Also, before anyone roasts me here im
Not bashing Lipsey. He is playing fantastic basketball and I’m looking forward to having him here several years.

The thing about backing off Tamin is that it means you're allowing him to make uncontested passes and he will make you pay by finding the right guy in the right position. Otherwise the coaches in this league would already be doing it.

Also, he's really good at forcing the defender to make a decision. He's almost always moving forward off the dribble. Guard him and he makes an accurate pass. Back up and he takes it all the way to the rim.

Yeah he’s such a good finisher and he sort of lulls you to sleep with his changing of speeds that if you do play off him he can use it against you. He’s also incredible at attacking defender’s angles to get by them for layups.

I think he is a lot quicker than some teams are realizing. Seems like he is getting downhill into the lane petty easily when he wants to. And that’s without a strong outside threat which would hypothetically allow defenders to sag off him a little bit (so even more impressive really).

He's very deliberate and efficient with his movements when he drives. He's got a little extra gear and nice change of pace too which throws the defense off

Well technically he says he’s getting $0.00 at Texas and went there because ISU only has two starting point guards in the NBA and I assume Texas has eleven or something.
That’s total BS, if your good enough to play pro basketball those scouts will find you no matter where you play your college basketball at!

He is not good enough to make to the NBA as a PG. He is not a good passer and he is too turnover prone. I also think he doesn’t have high basketball IQ.

I’m not talking about Hunter! I’m saying if you’re good enough for the nba the scouts will find you no matter where you play so his statement is pure BS !

Tyrese Hunter 2021:

Lipsey currently has a higher rating than Hunter finished the 2021 season... Both are almost IDENTICAL in assists and steals per game.. However, Lipsey turns the ball over far less than Hunter.

His ability to finish at the rim is already elite. I think it's his ability TO GET to the rim that will see the most improvement.

Right now he picks and chooses his spots. Eventually that may progress to a more "at will" ability, kind of like (but not to that ability) we are seeing with Nowell.

Another fun stat I thought I'd throw into this thread, because Lipsey's a big part of it:

Through 14 games this year, ISU has not - in any game - had more Turnovers than Forced Turnovers (i.e. the opponent has had more TOs in every game). Even in the two losses!

Last year there were 9 (!!) games where we forced fewer TOs than we committed, and we went 4-5 in those games

Last year we averaged 13.8 TOs per game and forced 16.6
This year we average 13.0 TOs per game and have forced 20.0

I didn't realize we'd improved that much!
