Lineup Talk

No informed opinion here, other than to say that I'm very excited about the ability we should have to handle foul trouble and injury next season. Mostly we just shouldn't have to run our guys into the ground by season's end like we've seen recently.

Be interesting if there is any consideration of George redshirting. I haven't heard that talk. Has there been information that Nick won't be ready to go? I thought last I heard Steve talk about him everything was in good order. I think you minutes distribution excludes Griffin. I expect him to get more minutes at the 4 than I do THT at that position.
No one has said anything about it but Nick was unable to shake the issue last offseason even after they thought it was licked so there is room to worry.

I know this is not based on any real intimate understanding of the roster like we might have as fans, but here are minutes projections by one website...

http://www.barttorvik.com/team.php?team=Iowa+St.&year=2019

That adds up to around 500 minutes, so the 80 for Lindell is more like 80 * (200/500) = 32.

That same website projects rosters, playing time, and W/L for next season for the whole country, by the way. It is rather neat if you look at it.

Their projections have us re-play the same schedule. With our changes in the roster/rotation with everybody else's changes, we have this outcome...

That would have to be a tournament team going 500 in the Big 12.

By conference I bet you'll see a small ball lineup

Babb
Wigginton
Shayok
THT/Talley
Lard/Young/Jaconsen

I think Lewis will end up being a good sharp shooter off the bench

A few points here:

1.) Don't forget THT is as highly regarded a recruit as Wigginton. If he is capable of making a similar impact his freshman year he deserves to start.
2.) We have a ton of length at guard which will allow us to play small ball.
3.) We were forced to play Lard and Young at the same time last year and small ball lineups and stretch 4s absolutely torched us.
4.) Prohm has mentioned multiple times now Shayok has the ability to defend 1-4

My prediction for your starting lineup:

Babb
Wigginton
Horton-Tucker
Shayok
Lard

The opening season starting five? I'll go with:

NWB
LW
Shayok
THT
Lard

That's not a knock on Sol or Jacobsen or any of the returners, I just think THT is going to be too good to not be out there right away.
I think he will be eventually, but solo starts the season, up to THT to force a guy out

I realize he is a freshman, but this post completely ignores the potential impact of Griffin. I could be completely wrong (it has happened before) but I feel he may well have a greater impact than many who seem to completely treat him as an after thought.

Several have said this, but I agree with the NWB, LW, MS, THT, Lard lineup come Big 12 time barring any unfortunate happenings.

I'd also say that I wouldn't be surprised if all 5 earned some type of Big 12 Conference honor, which is ridiculous to think about.

I think that Griffin is getting a lot of pressure because of the Kansas offer. His potential is really, really high but he's not as polished as Lewis was coming into last season. If his ball handling improves dramatically over the summer we will have reason to slam the kool-aid.

There’s not enough possessions to go around. Somebody is going to be accepting a more complementary role. Which is fine.

I'm not sure if this is hushed information, or if it was simply something I had missed, but it appears that the situation that NWB had was much more grave than I knew. Today I saw a twitter post with video about him ringing the chemo bell (believe this means he has finished chemo treatments).View attachment 54980
That was Nick retweeting a video of a different twitter user who had just gone through chemo. Had nothing to do with Nick's injuries, etc.

Thanks ZZZ. Didn't click the video. Clears that up. Will delete the post so others aren't confused.

One of the reasons I think he’s prime for a 6th man role. He’d be great there and it could help him to not break down physically in March.
I don't know, I think the other two are better player's but not better point gaurds.

This replicates a few predictions in this thread, I’ll do it anyway.

Start of season:
G Weiler-Babb
G Wigginton
G/F Shayok
F Young
C Lard
6: Talley
7: Jacobson
8. Lewis

After that, we’ll see how high the freshmen will climb the ladder, and how soon.

So, THT is not going to play?

Lewis didn't seem that polished from videos prior to hitting the court, we knew he could shoot and had athleticism, but ball handling and defense were his downfalls. I think you if you put Griffin on last year's team, he has a bigger impact than Lewis did. You know Griffin his a hard worker based on the fact he's transitioned from a post to a guard. It shows he is willing to work hard.

I don't think Griffin's ball handling looks any better than Lewis's. I do agree that he would have had a larger impact on last year's team, but I think it would have been from playing small ball 4 instead of having a Beverly or Brase in the lineup.

I agree, but I just get the sense that Lewis came in and expected it to be easier than it was. I just get the feeling this freshman class is going to be full of hard workers. I think these guys will be similar to Niang and Naz with focus on the game. Just a gut feeling.

Wow I don't know how I missed this thread. Sorry for delayed response.

For me one of the key ingredients to the lineup next year is how well Lard and Solo play together. For me, they don't really compliment each other at all. I believe Talley and Jacobson do compliment each of those guys and my lineup will reflect that.

Another caveat in my lineup is that Shayok came to ISU to play with the ball in his hands. Wigginton will also want the ball more. Babb had good stats at PG last year, but as the year went on the offense bogged down and the results weren't there with Babb at PG he is a 2 or 3 on this team.

I also believe that one of Wigginton and Shayok will play large mins, with that said:

Starters:
Wigginton
Shayok
THT/ Griffin
Talley
Lard

2nd Unit
Wiggs/ Shayok (hot hand)
Babb
Griffin/ THT (the non starter)
Jacobson
Solo

Lewis and Haliburton could see some mins as well but that is prob close to how the 9-11 shake out. You could easily see Solo or Jacobson flipping with Lard or Talley. Like I said before I don't like the Lard and Solo together and we are better splitting them moving forward IMO.
