Levell Moton

All I can say about this guy is WOW.

He took no moral victory from last night at all. I love that. And then he commented about how tough he is on his guys and what he expects out of them each and every day. He tells all of them, and his potential recruits too, that they shouldn't come play for him unless they want to be held accountable each and every day. I just love that.

I think "moral victories" are only offered when you ALMOST beat a team thats much better then you. The only moral victory they could have was in the first few minutes of the game. We owned them the rest of the time.

Everything else about the man seems spot on though! While I hate to see kids crying on the bench, it's very genuine when the coach is vulnerable enough to help them grieve....

Leave Moton alone, no one can have him but us.:twitcy:

They were definitely competitive beyond the first few minutes as it was a 6 point game at half, and we didn't really put the game away until well into the 2nd half. We shot 64% for the game and over 50% from 3, and you can blame their defense for some of that, but like I said, we even had some 3 pointers hit the rim and drop in. Might have been our best shooting night of the year or close to it.

I see he also had his arm around Kane and had a talk with him. He is definitely a class act and is helping those kids be better people in a rough environment.

He seems like a class act. That shot of him at the end with two of his players was touching.

It may have been hormones, but that made me cry. I actually felt guilty about theCyclone Power chant for a bit after that.

Not sure why we are giving all these props to a coach and team that we just gave a massive beat down. It is not like it was a close game and we hung 93 on them. If Fred leaves, I hope we set our sites higher than Motown.

His team has been D1 for what, 3 years? We shot 64% from the field which is insane. Most MEAC teams or teams that have barely been D1 would have lost that game by 40 or 50. We did beat them down, but they have far less talent than us (with the exception of Ingram who's legitimately good and their PG isn't bad either) and still put up 80. I think his team could have beaten a number of teams in the NCAA tournament. Probably Creighton, and could have kept it close with Duke. They could have probably beaten a number of 4 seed and lower teams . It's a shame they ran into our buzzsaw..

In the end, I wouldn't take him as a head coach but I would definitely take the guy as an assistant. I think he needs more experience at a high level before he jumps ship to a high major. My guess is he'll either get an assistant job at a high major school or he'll get a head coaching job at a mid major like a MAC team. If he does well there, then he'd be up for a high major job.

The only way he goes right to a high major is if he absolutely dominates the MEAC for the next 5 years (like not losing much, getting to the tournament every year, and winning by very comfortable margins on average) and starts beating some good conference teams in the preseason on a regular basis.

He seems like a great MEAC coach, but no thanks at the Big XII level. We've seen what happens when a guy tries the slow down, deliberate offense at a high major on the east side of the state. Fans don't like it and players don't like it. Maybe he would adjust his style to suit better players, but he would need to prove it at a mid-major before I'd want him as a coach.

By the way, weren't you on here telling us how this game would never be a blowout before the game? Glad to see you've come back to have a little crow. Eat up!

They scored 75 pts on us. That's not Lickliter style basketball at all. The guy can flat out coach.

You coach what you have. Moton knew that they don't have the team that can outscore us, so in order to attempt to stay in the game, they slowed it down.

They ran a very effective offense IMO. As Moton said after the game, they got basically whatever they wanted offensively on us. But his team couldn't handle us defensively, which you would expect.

I'll tell you this... I'd rather have this guy than Fran McCaffrey. At least with Moton, I can tell what his team is trying to do offensively. I have no clue what Iowa is trying to do at times.

Don't get me wrong, Fred Hoiberg is THE man. I would not want anyone else coaching Iowa State. Nobody. I was saying that if Fred left for some reason, I would definitely consider Moton. I think he could work with the level of athletes he has and use them to their best ability. That's all.

His reaction when he heard about Niang being done is all I need to know about the guys as a person.

As a coach, we'll see. I think he will probably be a pretty damn good one.

Levell Moton is a class act. Here is what he said to me after I responded to his tweet.

He seems like a really good guy. But I doubt we remember him in a few months.

Don't get me wrong, I really like pretty much everything about the guy. But IF Fred were to ever leave for the NBA, I would hope it would be with us in a better position than to have a low level conference coach as our number one candidate.
