Las Vegas Mass Shooting

Try not to make too much sense of the senseless - the shooter was evil, and sounded well prepared to carry this out. Thought are with the innocent victims.

Automatic weapons have been banned since 1986, so it will be interesting to learn how he acquired them and apparently so many.

Has it been confirmed that they were automatic weapons? Could he have done that kind of damage using semi-automatics? Sorry, I know next to nothing about guns.

Very sad. Way to much hate in our world today. Really just feel horrible for those affected and their families. I hope our country can come together and stay together amidst all of the insanity.

There are plenty of videos out there and you can definitely hear that they are full auto. And there's no way that a semi-auto would be able to put that many rounds out in that short period of time from a single shooter.

I saw a video of a news report where a girl said that before walking into the concert an older lady said "You are all going to die tonight" to her and her group of friends. Apparently they are now looking for an accomplice of some sort? Sorry if I'm late to that info, been in meetings all morning.

Two ways I could see, although I'd say both are somewhat unlikely.
1) Bump fire mechanism - allows a semi-auto to use its recoil to engage trigger after each shot. Although they usually are not that seamless as what we've heard in the shooting videos. Watch the end of this video.

2) Galting attachment, although I don't know much about how these work on non .22 LR rifles.

I should have said unmodified semi-auto. That's 600+ trigger pulls.

Also, that bump firing mechanism is pretty cool.

I agree they are both unlikely, however, when I hear the videos I can almost convince myself that the shots sting together faster then slower at times. Maybe I'm wrong on that, or there are acoustic problems with the video, IDK. But the second "gatling" type attachment could definitely account for some of that if that is the case.

My automatic weapons comment earlier came from hearing multiple reports of the incident referencing automatic weapons. This in addition to video and witness interviews who said they thought they were firecrackers at first. Hard to get a semi-auto weapon to sound like firecrackers for a sustained period.

I know there are several ways to convert semi-auto to auto, so it is possible to either legally obtain full auto or to make these modifications and be in either illegal or territory very close to it. I also have learned of smaller DIY CNC milling machines that can fabricate a receiver in your home from essentially a block of aluminum. With the rise of computer assisted printing and/or milling machines there is very little to stop someone from these weapons if they have the will and modest funding.

I do think these incidents should be reported, but I do not agree with how the narrative is shaped, especially this early on. We probably won't know much of substance for at least 48 hours or more. I first saw the headlines this morning - many along the lines of "50 killed, deadliest shooting on record", etc. and my first reaction was: We're keeping score now? What a morbidly American thing to do.

I'm curious if they'll release details on the weapons used.

One of the witnesses said they could see the green light from the window where the shooter was every time the weapon fired. Why green light? Would that be a like a hunting light mounted on the gun?

"Marilou Danley was identified as Paddock's companion or roommate, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said.

She does not appear to have been involved in the shooting and was in the Philippines when the massacre took place, authorities said. Paddock had been using some of her identification, Lombardo said."

So sad and scary. Like the pulse night club shooting, I just think of the confusion while at a loud venue not knowing what is happening right away...this one especially scary as the shots were coming from far away, so I'd guess some people saw people dropping and not understanding what was happening at first.
