Lard should start

..... Prohm is playing Lard the way he is for a reason....

That's obvious, but has anyone asked CSP what is the reason? Seems like a legit question as we continue to hear from multiple analysts doing our games that Lard is one of the best talents on the team. Is it defense, foul tendency, attitude? If it's truly 'little things', OK, he probably be starting shortly.

Interesting article in by RP in the DM Register this morning about having to rebuild the work ethic for practice. I wonder if this is part of why Beverly plays so much. In his interviews, he sounds like he came here to do the work, not just get the minutes. Right now, Prohm is building the ethos of the program for years to come, not just deciding who should get minutes.

There have been many instances of 6th men or bench players being one of the 5 best players on their teams and there are many reasons why they played those roles.

I think it should be pointed out that Prohm wants Beverly to shoot. He said as much after the scrimmage. Beverly might not turn out to be a great shooter but his shots are at such a low volume it's really hard to know how he'll perform down the road. His shots in the paint obviously need improvement as he is struggling to create scoring openings against defending bigs. It will work out one way or another. We just need patience.

He was 3/3 from 3PT in the "secret" Nebraska scrimmage.

He is 0/12 so far in games that count. I am not sure how he did in the exhibition.

That is 3/15 for the year = 20%.

I am not a Jeff Beverly hater. If he only plays 15-20 minutes a game, keeps some fouls and fatigue off Young and Lard, and uses his width and weight (and not his height, obviously) for positioning to suck down a few rebounds, he has definitely done his job.

I would still much rather Wigginton, Jackson, NWB, and Brase were taking our threes, though. Each of them is hovering in the 40% range so far.

I think earlier in the thread someone quoted Prohm as saying that Lard needed to do the "little things".

He's playing a lot of minutes critical minutes, so Prohm knows he's a very good player. He'll probably earn his starting spot soon enough. If not then he continues to provide that boost of the bench. Would that be so terrible?

Being labeled a started is just that, a label. What really matters is who is playing most when we need big minutes. That's likely to be Lard, especially if not starting him leads to him not fouling out before crunch time.

It’s dense to interpret this thread as suggesting Lard sitting in itself is the issue. For example, McGee was coming off the bench behind Big 12 players.

I would argue that Jackson was easily the fifth best player last year, too.

Granted, different situation considering we had so many guards/wings in front of him, but Prohm definitely ran this small lineup out a lot last year...

Morris
Jackson
Mitrou-Long
Thomas
Burton

I don't hate Beverly. I strongly dislike that he plays any amount of minutes, but understand that it's a connector year for this team. At best he should be in an Edozie-type role. His efficiency numbers at UTSA were abysmal. He can't shoot threes or twos with efficiency. By Kenpom's metrics, even as the team's leading scorer for UTSA and having the highest usage in his entire conference, he was only the efficiency "MVP" of his team five times all last year. Simply put, his usage here has been way too high. Hell, his usage at UTSA was way too high on a bad team.

Compare his large sample to Lard, and there is a massive disparity. Granted, Lard's numbers are gained in a much smaller sample size. But anybody with a brain looking at raw metrics would realize that Beverly is not an effective player comparatively. He's a volume scorer. Lard is efficient - QUITE efficient, in fact.

And why does it make any difference if the 2nd foul is picked up w/ 12 minutes left or 18 minutes left?

Both those foul calls were garbage by the way.

We should probably bring Wigginton off the bench too so we have a guard that brings energy off the bench.

Uhhh, no. Lard's propensity to get quick fouls is a pattern over several games, not just last night. Unless he suddenly improves immensely in all areas, I don't see him starting. If Beverly is going to be replaced in the starting lineup, I predict it will be by Brase who is improving more and more as he regains endurance and strength in his knee/leg. I also think his 3-pt % will continue to increase as the season goes forward, maybe to the point Prohm inserts pick-and-pop plays for him.

I believe the answer to your questions is because at that point it allowed Solo to have those 2.5 minutes of rest. You will get no argument from me that Lard is one of the top five most talented players on the team...in fact he might be as high as two or three. However, he is not one of the best "sustained" performing. If he starts along side Solo, then when Lard goes to the bench with two quick fouls, who provides the rest for Solo? With Talley out injured, you essentially are left with extended minutes for Hans and Jeff, the very thing you seem to be arguing against. I bet Prohm would love to have Lard on the floor for extended minutes, but the way Lard is choosing to play, he has limited Prohm's options.

He's got a reallly, really good mid-range jumper. That has been the one constant in his game since starting to play at the college level. If he can get 4 of those shots a game and he works hard underneath the basket on both ends, I am completely content with him being out there.

As others have said I think Prohm likes what he has set up right now and won't go away from Beverley in the starting role, at least not yet, but I would be surprised if we didn't start to see a slow drop in his minutes as we ramp up for conference play.

Fair point... agree on the 2.5 minutes of rest for Solo, didn't think of it that way.

Lard is arguably our top player on the floor... need to keep him there without fouls.

Brase and Solo were the game down the stretch for a reason, love Lard and he's going be the deciding factor in a lot of games we win but Prohm trusts the other two guys more. Having guys like Brase and Lard coming off the bench is huge and a luxury ISU has maybe never had, certainly not in the Morgan/Chewy/Hoiberg/Prohm eras.

I love the intensity Lard brings off the bench, he and Lewis come in, play hard and put a lot of pressure on the opposition. Larry E would have called them his "shock troops".
