Kent State post game thread...

I would say that this game shows us that we face worse than even the worst case senario pre-season. Is it possible that Chisik was just the benefactor of great talent before coming to ISU? I don't care if you have a new coach, there are players with experience who are playing at a lower level than even last season. Maybe I'm just frustrated but this team appears to be much worse than I can even remember.

From my experience, I have noticed that an excellent way of getting the student section really into the game is scoring more than 14 points.

That was the worst team on our schedule.

They're not the worst team on our schedule... UNI is & we could lose to them. Toledo isn't bad either & both MAC teams will win a lot of games this year. It'll take time. We unfortunately gave Dmac 12 years, why not give Chizik a couple seasons? Be realistic people!

Some observations:
Definitely disappointed. Are my expectations really to high to beat a MAC team at home? I know, I know, its the new system. (Florida has went 22-4 with a National Championship in Urban Meyer's 2 years at Florida, teaching them a new system.)

Lines are a glaring weekness. Getting shoved around on both sides of the ball does not bode well for a good season.

Meyer has to play better to give us a chance to win any games. His accuracy and reads tonight tell me Arnaud best be ready to play, if so called.

For all the talk of change, I still saw some of the same fundamental mistakes that we saw last year, including: overpursuit, blown coverage, poor tackling.

Positives: JJ Bass looks great. Sure wish we could have had him the 2 years before now.

I think we have a strong group of receivers, if we could just get them the ball.........

Its one thing to have not a great season and another to lose 12 games in a row. Kent State hasn't beaten a bcs team in 20 years. Even if we had won this game we would still be looking at 2-12. That, my friends, is not worth 7 figures to a coach, even in his first season. I will stand behind ISU and follow every game as I have been for many years. I can't even begin to say how frustrating it is to see Meyer play at this level.

First off, was it me or was Barney Cotton calling the plays tonight? That was very disturbing. Of course, we open the second half with a nice drive and that was that.

Bret Meyer -- bad. Very bad. Not just because of the interceptions, but I have given up hope that he will learn how to NOT lock on to one receiver. And when will we use Todd Blythe in non-"throw the ball up and play jump ball situations"? Sometime this year it will time to see if Arnaud really is the second coming of Seneca.

Really? Seriously? Was the play calling just a joke? HaHa got ya???

I expected a lot more out of the crowd tonight. 47,000 is a great number, but it was not a hectic environment at all.

I really do believe there will be some upsets before the end of the year. I just hope this isn't like Toledo where everyone goes on to beat them.

If we lose at UNI we may as well play the future players and give them some experience. Hate to say that about Meyer, but he doesn't seem to ever improve. Very sad.

Even from where we were sitting you could tell that Meyer doesn't look anybody off. He's locked on to them. If they aren't open then he's running.
Until he changes or the QB position changes defenses will continue to key on that.

With Bret's performance tonight (and last year) maybe there is a good reason for all of the conservative playcalling last year and today.

Dude step away from the ledge. I guarantee by the end of the year the team will be much improved from tonight.

I will be surprised if we don't beat UNI. Yes, I realize what took place tonight but this was the first game in a new era. This is where we will see coaching take place. The thousand year old saying of "the most a team will improve is from game 1 to game 2" is something I firmly believe. Let's give these guys a chance to correct mistakes and make real adjustments. People talk like McCarney left us all this talent and we just dropped the ball tonight. We only have about 3-6 players who are legit starters in the Big 12 on our roster. There's various reasons why that is, but I believe that to be the case. We have a long ways to go to even the talent gap to get us back to being a winning team again. If we are losing games like this in year 3-4 of the Chizik era, you have a legit gripe, but not in the current state of this program.

-I thought the defense played fairly well considering the offense put them in tough spots.

-Offensive line play was better than I expected

-Culbertson is a sorry kicker. I'm sorry, but on a perfect night with no wind his 2 misses were unexceptable.

-Little disapointed in our conservative offense, and Bret Meyer's play.

Too much running in first half when game was in doubt. No real effort to throw long. JJ Bass is mostly sweep around outside runner. Sumrall did good on kickofff returns. Sandvig looked pathetic. Bates was put in a box by the playcalls.

I have really studied UNI and Kent State, I expect UNI to be better than Kent State so we need to be better,

O-line did well in the first half (well, better than I expected anyway), D-Line got straight whooped all night, DB's got burnt a few times. All in all a half-hearted effort in the second half by the offense. I am really disappointed in Meyer. It just always seems to me that he is not looking at all of his receivers. I like Bret, but kind of wanted to see how Austen would have done. Overall, I was disappointed in the offense and surprised by the defense. I think they did exceptionally well for as long as they were on the field as the offense didn't give them much time to breathe.

My Take

CAn't judge a team or coach by one game. So what...we lost our BCS championship hopes......who says we can't win the next game? Who says we can't win a bunch more? We played inconsistent...yes. We made some mistakes that killed us. So what, we also finally had a good looking running game. We had fans who were just pumped to be in the atmosphere again! I will be there next week all day and will root all night for the cyclones to help our coach get his first win!

We stuck through McDermott his first year when he had lots of downs, lets stick behind Chizik!
GO CYCLONES

Re: My Take

He didn't lose to Kent State......nah I am kiddin. I liked a lot of the play calling, nice to see something different. I can't wait to see how we go after teams when we open up the play book a little more. And the best thing I saw last night was JJ Bass, that boy can flat out run. I was kind of surprised that Arnaud/Bates didn't get more PT, especially since Meyer is back to making bad decisions.

Re: My Take

I have loved Meyer his career, but the man simply cannot scramble. He gets caught everytime he has a hole. That's fine, I don't expect him to run for huge gains, but I'm sick of having huge holes and getting one yard out of them because someone grabs Meyer's leg and he doesn't break the tackle. Either way, I'msure the the coaches will figure something out for UNI!

Re: My Take

And to make the loss worse, I had to see the idoit GREGG DOYEL IN PERSON!!!!!
