Kent State post game thread...

It's the first game of the first season. Anything before year #3 will be gravy. I liked they way he rotated defensive players. Bass looks legit. Only Chizik knows but if he risked losing to Kent State to build for the future I am all for it. Bret Meyer and the offense simply have to play better for this team to win.

I really thought the D stepped up quite a bit, but can't count on that all the time. O did good here and there, but for the most part could'nt keep a drive alive. I think once thing come together it will be fine. Bass really showed alot tonight of what i think we all may have thought he could do. i don't know though.

Meyer was horrible. And Bates getting his redshirt taken away on one very crappy play sucked. I hope he gets more playing time later in the year.

Blythe didn't have a ball thrown to him until 1/4 left in the 2nd quarter and it could have been much worse if the defense hadn't come up with some key turnovers in the red zone.

Wish I could hear Chiz's post-game post-mortum. The man seems like he's all business ... and I'm not thinking he's going to tolerate all the penalites and mistakes.
So ... what changes happen first? Meyer made some pretty dumb decisions for senior. Could Arnaud's chance be sooner than later?

i dont understand wy we didnt spread their D out our first god drive of the second half all we did was pass and they couldn't stop us why shy away from it? i know chiz wants to run run run but seriously why not pass it was working although meyer played like a freshman a lot of times this game

My take after watching and listening via Clone Zone:

Realistically we all knew that this is the same team we had last year with some losses and a few pick-ups. We also got a new coach that brought in a new staff and system. With that said the game had a few bright spots, the D looked good at times and JJ was a stud, more in the first half then the second but he did get + yds at times where I thought he would be stopped for a loss multiple times. That is a good thing.

I just hope that all this positive momentum that has been brewing with the fan base throughout the last year does not fizzle too early. If we are seeing this same type of game at Lincoln then I will get worried. If we can improve from here and show some positive steps along the way, I will stay on board. The change is there, at times, the question is can Gene find a way to keep it there throughout the whole game without having stupid penalties and mistakes against a lesser opponent kill us.

I honestly do think that we made the coaching change at the right time and we will be ok and improve as the season goes on, this can still be a team that shocks some people, it will just take time.

*I may have just set the record for most comma's used in one post*

For every positive tonight, there was a negative. WHY oh WHY did they try to run an option with Bates! It's not so much that play as there was an earlier play they ran with Bates on a reverse. There goes his redshirt. Way to go.

The team started out great, and it just unraveled from there. There was a pass interference call that should've had flags flying everywhere on that 2nd interception, but in hindsight, maybe it was too close to call. That's where the game ended, unfortunately.

Shaggy... WHY MAN! Missed the first FG, the 2nd FG... PLONG, hits the upright.

Defense still looked as lost as ever out there.

Shaggy missed some kicks? What? You don't say?

I don't mean to bag on the poor kid, but one thing that really pissed me off about McCarney was his total lack of ability/interest to recruit at least one solid Division I level kicker. I'm sure Culbertson does his best, but for crying out loud.....kickers can either win or lose you games, and Culbertson has helped cost us at least two so far that I can remember.

Just got home...
I really don't know what happened to our Cyclones. Maybe I'm just tired, and I hate to say it, but IMO I don't think we'll win a single game this year. That was the worst team on our schedule. If we defeat anyone ...how can you explain this loss? I really don't see a victory this year. (I still can't get over Drake's victory though) wow!

People people people...it was just one game...someone who is making their debut at head coach deserves one game to dip and test the water.

I WILL NOT JUMP OFF THE BANDWAGON!!

Too many penalties and way too many mental miscues tonight.

Play calling seemed suspect. Too conservative and made some crazy calls.
D-Line needs lots of work, 2nd half they were getting 4 yards before getting touched.
Could be a very long season.

Should've been interference on Meyer's 2nd pick, but it was a horrible decision. Throwing off his back foot and into four guys. Horrible choice.

Were the stands full tonight? Earlier I had heard there were a lot of empty seats. Was that BS?

Overall......we just couldn't finish anything. That is not an excuse....it is a problem.

Every position showed signs of success, but with all due respect to Kent State, we should look either great or good, but never look bad, which we did a lot.

Obviously a disappointment, but somewhat confusing also.

I think there was like 47K there, but there were some bare spots in the upper level. Hillsides looked pretty good though.
