Keeping TJ

What about the good players TJ got for McDermott? He has a proven record of bringing talent to Ames.

Yep but no where near the level of KU and that's where we hoped we were going. With Fred and TJ maybe, with TJ alone doubtful, with TJ and an up and coming coach I hope but not likely. That's why I was hoping for a splash hire. Someone who brought their own national recruiting cache. Prohm and whoever he has recruiting for him need to strike when the iron is hot and right now we are way behind. I hope we catch lightning in a bottle with Prohm he looks like a good coach. But those who think TJ would take that next step I think are a little naive. Maybe he could maintain the status quo but that's about it. Maybe status quo is good enough for some.

Anyway that's what I found frustrating about the calls for TJ. And now all the calls for blaming JP if this doesn't work out. Unless like I said he didn't do his utmost to sign a big name.

I think Chris Williams basically said the same thing although not near as eloquently on the radio today. That's he's tired of basically being everyone's second choice. Or something like that. He said he was concerned about Prohms recruiting to get us to the next level but I'm not sure he ever questioned TJ's ability to so nor has anyone else.

I apologize if I didn't represent Chris' position but that's kind of where I stand also. Status quo will not be good enough. Hope I'm wrong.

Let's say it this way because I don't think anyone has actually said it. Our coach was not fired he was hired somewhere else because he was really good. I don't know about you guys but I have a hard time with a successful program losing its leader to a "better" job, not taking everyone with him, and not a single person staying on. That's what I feel is happening.

Why in the world would you have a hard with that? Continuity for the sake of continuity is silly.

TJ was not here the past two years, and when Fred left, so did the previous program.

If Prohm succeeds here I doubt he stays past 5 years. I know that is a long time as an assistant but if TJ wants to be a head coach and his wife wants to be in Ames he could use the 5 years under Prohm to become the coach in waiting. Far fetched I understand but looking back over our coach retention it isn't unrealistic.

However if prohm doesn't succeed, zero chance TJ is the new head coach. And even if he does succeed he has the exact same resume he does now which wasn't good enough.

Do you think Fred will last 5 years in Chicago? TJ will have a head coaching gig long before 5 years pass.

Actually not IMO. It is apparent that he needs to get a HC job somewhere and be successful if he truly wants to be HC at Iowa State. That was the big flaw he had. Becoming a successful HC somewhere would address that flaw.

As far as the comments about TJ not being here the last 2 years and we were successful so there is no cause for concern, consider that we really did very poorly with HS recruiting when TJ was gone. We got Noskowiak when TJ came back. For HS recruits that were not TJ recruits in the last two years, the only one we have is Tsalmporis. And it is in doubt whether he will return. And there is no question that he is a long term project.

Our HS recruiting the last 2 years was not good. We did get a couple of good young transfers though in Cooke and Burton.

I disagree. If Prohm uses TJ and mentors him to become an HC then it is a win win for both. I do agree if TJ just does the same job he gets nothing.

It is completely unrealistic IMO.
If TJ wants to be a P5 head coach, he needs to get a mid major HC job ASAP

Nothing? People do realize assistants make like $200k+ right? That's still a pretty awesome job for someone with probably only a BA.

And isn't TJ like 37? That's not old at all to still be an assistant coach. Underwood must have been like 49 and still an AC.

Thought Prohm lost his MS lead recruiter last month. Plus some assistants may be looked at MS head coach. Might want to watch what is happening now at MS.

Not sure how serving under Prohm as an AC results in the needed experience to get a HC job. And not sure the "mentoring" that would take place. TJ just served under Fred Hoiberg and also Romar at the P5 level as an assistant and also served under GMAC. Don't see how additional time as an AC under our newly named HC who is 40 years old and has 4 years experience as an HC at Murray State results in the experience necessary for TJ to now become a HC. And I do not mean that as a knock on Prohm. But at this point, it would not be considered a greater experience than serving under Fred, and even Romar.

Yes he did. But it wouldn't surprise me at all if he tries to get his asst that went to LA tech to come to Isu. I mean it's LA tech or Isu? A lot more $$. I certainly hope TJ is smart enough to stick around. I honestly don't know where he'd go..maybe there is an opening at another P5 team? Other than that there is no mid major HC gig open.

It is likely that McMahon applies for the Murray State job IMO. They have a history of promoting assistants to HC.

Most P5 staffs have 3 FT assistants. It's possible that Prohm could have 4? Now that we are saving nearly $800k a year it's possible that we add another and still save over $500k a year from what we were paying Fred.

Yea both McMahon and William Small will prob apply for the gig at Murray st. I'd say whichever doesn't get it will join Prohm. It wouldn't surprise me if TJ applies for that gig either.

My point is if TJ wants to stay in Ames and is okay with being as assistant he would not be the first assistant promoted to an HC job. The big question is, does he want to stay in Ames and hope for better results the next time or is he willing to move? If his family is dead set on being in Ames he could be the next Hallaran.

There's an NCAA limit on assistant coaches, you can only have three.
