Keep the coaches

Snyder could win at Iowa State with the level of talent we have now, but maybe not the same players. I'm saying that because I don't think K-State is any more talented than we are, but they are better at developing that talent and more importantly they know exactly what they are looking for in the recruiting process.

I, for one, think it's the system Snyder runs at KSU; from what I've seen he strongly believes in the K.I.S.S. method. Keeping it simple allows players to pick things up faster and contribute earlier. KSU's players don't have to stop and think before executing their assignments, and practices will be more focused. Snyder's offensive system seems to run off of maybe three or four base plays with a number of variations for each one. Defensive sets seem to follow a similar method. KSU's players play off muscle memory most of the time due to repetition, so their in game execution is usually excellent. It's a similar philosophy to that of Woody Hayes except it includes passing the ball as well. ISU on the other hand seems to have fallen in love with the more complex systems that OU, OSU, Baylor, et al employ, but our players aren't the caliber of those other teams. Snyder's system relies on execution, the spread and zone read rely on highly talented players. I'm thinking ISU should rely on a system that relies on execution rather than talent.

I actually agree that we needed a different offensive identity before Mangino was hired. It was because he was able to hire Hermann, and his successful experience. He was a hot commodity, and a flash hire.

I did envison Lanning as a Klein type QB.

But the simple fact of the matter is that Bill Snyder is in a class of his own as far as head coaches are concerned.

Agreed. Plus, Snyder gets the right players. Not necessarily the best players, but guys who fit well with their program. JUCOs and walk-ons have had a lot of success there. I'm hoping that with Mangino at OC, we start doing the same in regards to our recruiting.

I don't expect to see a great Cyclone team, either. That's nowhere near my expectation.
I simply want to see a team that can win 6-8 games every year. That should be a minimal standard, but is apparently much too high for Cyclone football. That's very disappointing.

I can recall a time 3-4 years ago with CPR that I genuinely felt we had a chance to win any game. Sure, there were some blowouts, but I felt the team was capable of pulling of an upset in any game. They played with a passion and fire that allowed us to sneak up on people. Anymore, there's none of that. The team is flat, their play is flat, and we are back to having to scratch and claw to win 3 games.

I don't know what the answer is with the coaches. We suck, but I'm not sure firing everyone fixes that. Maybe it does, hell I don't know. What I do know is that when Pollard comes knocking for season ticket renewals, I will have to give long hard thought on whether it's worth it to waste a day watching this crap, or if I'm better served watching at home and going about my day after we suffer embarrassing loss and embarrassing loss. I mean, even our lone home win wasn't a whole hell of a lot of fun. I went out at halftime and listened to the rest of the game in an RV. Even in a win it was far from a fun football game.

As for firing the coaches, I'm at a "it is what it is" point with Iowa State football. You can try and shake things up and fire everyone, or you can stay the course and hope things turn around, but in either scenario I'm not convinced it will help.

It really sucked when Cael Sanderson left ISU but you have to remember why he left. Recruiting sucks in Iowa. ....

Wrong. We've had a national championship in wrestling program. Cael left for one reason...about $1 mil.

Im 40 years old. I have never seen a great Cyclone football team. The seneca teams were the closest i have seen and oh yeah they got blown the hell out by Oklahoma also.
Disagree, the 9-3 team lead by Sage and a great defense were the best I have ever seen....
