Jon Miller never learns

I agree with Jon. It's not about the stats all of the time. The number of big plays and throws he made against Iowa was incredible. Tulsa was more methodical. However, the way he looked against Tulsa suggested that we may see that 2011 Iowa Version of Jantz another time or two this year.

I'd agree with this. If you take away the stats and look at the big time plays made in each game, I don't think you'll see a game like that again (unless it's against Western Illinois next week). The "Seneca-type" plays that Steele made off of broken plays last year was ridiculous. I'm hoping this year he won't have to rely on athletic ability as much and we have seen that already against Tulsa.

Is he supposed to say he thinks the clones will win? Does anyone honestly think that would be a good move for him?

Jantz was better v Iowa than Seneca was. Unless I am just getting old and can't recall clearly. I remember the across the body throw off scramble deep in ISU territory he made, which was an unreal play. But he didn't have the kind of game Jantz did from the wizardry dept. And I think I said something smart the day before the game last year, after there was an article comparing Jantz to Seneca, that there would never be another QB performance like Seneca made against Iowa, in this series. That lasted a whole 18 hours.

I think you could argue that. It was a better 'quarterback' game, to be sure. What Jantz did against Iowa last year, he might as well been wearing a cape. dude was amazing and Iowa State was the better team. Should have never gotten to overtime had ISU not hurt itself so much.

Here is what I wrote about Iowa State, today:

Recon: What to Expect from Iowa State | Hawkeye Nation

Good recap and synopsis, Jon. I think that sums up how the majority of (rational) fans think.

I really think, top to bottom, that ISU has the better team for the first time in a long, long time. That doesn't mean they will win, though.

Don't beat yourself up too much Jon. We all make mistakes

The good news this year is I am not doing a live daily sports talk show in advance of this game, so the chances of saying something stupid are greatly diminished. Given I have just one more radio hit before the game, tonight at Kippy's (and in the flesh), surrounding by ISU fans, I think I am gonna make it.

Or more accurately the chances of something stupid you say being memorialized.

I'm glad some of the things I say aren't broadcasted.

I'd look at it this way - Tulsa's front 4 were anchored by 2 upper classmen @ DT. Think they a little ahead of the green Iowa front here. Tulsa was replacing all their LBs from last year: 2 gone & 1 returner sitting out. Iowa returns their LBs, but they are undersized & supposedly fast (not sure I see the latter), so I'd give them the nod over Tulsa here. Def backs - Tulsa's safeties were good but I think their corners were pretty average. Think the opposite is true for Iowa. Corners are pretty good (although not fast - Hyde couldn't make ground on NIU's QB during the long run) but safeties did not perform the best in run support. They were not tested too much in the passing game, so that is hard to gauge. Still, would give the advantage here to Iowa.

Green @ QB offered more as a dual threat, but after the scripted plays of the first 2 drives, his passing was not one of an 'accurate' passer. JVB is typically more accurate, but he did not display great production in the 1st game on a neutral field under a new system & new coordinator. For their style of system, though, Iowa would still be placed ahead of Tulsa at the QB position. OL - kind of a toss up. Iowa has the history, but they were poor last week in pass protection, but they did provide for an adequate running game. Tulsa's line did not stand out to me - not terrible, not fearsome. Slight edge Iowa. Tulsa's RBs are ahead of Iowa's as are the WRs. Their H-back who led the nation in receptions from that position was targeted double digit times & had 1 reception. The TEs for Iowa are hyped for potential, but they haven't proven nearly as much on the field including last week.

In the end, I expect Iowa to improve, most notably VandenBerg. He'll be more accurate on the short routes. However, I do not believe this will translate to Iowa's offense performing that much better as a whole. I still laugh watching one of Iowa's first trips in the red zone - it was third & 6 and they ran an underneath route for 4 yards then settled for the field goal. Get used to this Eye fans. The Texas faithful were being honest about Davis.

Ha! Good point. I hate and love this rivalry. Me and the CF ownership gang had a fun text exchange late last night and I am really looking forward to coming up to Kippy's tonight to meet a lot of ISU fans. Especially the ones who think they hate me. Come on out, let's chat. If you still think I am the devil after that, then so be it ;)

The hoks better not forget this... otherwise Sunday morning could be a little painful after the pounding they receive.

Even the Des Moines Register thinks so...

Driving traffic to your site. Good idea, Jon. That said, you should try to get on a "balanced" radio show. I actually do like your commentary. And you're much more likeable when you try for balance and objectivity. Ask Andy Garmin if Cotlar can be replaced, please.
