I'd look at it this way - Tulsa's front 4 were anchored by 2 upper classmen @ DT. Think they a little ahead of the green Iowa front here. Tulsa was replacing all their LBs from last year: 2 gone & 1 returner sitting out. Iowa returns their LBs, but they are undersized & supposedly fast (not sure I see the latter), so I'd give them the nod over Tulsa here. Def backs - Tulsa's safeties were good but I think their corners were pretty average. Think the opposite is true for Iowa. Corners are pretty good (although not fast - Hyde couldn't make ground on NIU's QB during the long run) but safeties did not perform the best in run support. They were not tested too much in the passing game, so that is hard to gauge. Still, would give the advantage here to Iowa.
Green @ QB offered more as a dual threat, but after the scripted plays of the first 2 drives, his passing was not one of an 'accurate' passer. JVB is typically more accurate, but he did not display great production in the 1st game on a neutral field under a new system & new coordinator. For their style of system, though, Iowa would still be placed ahead of Tulsa at the QB position. OL - kind of a toss up. Iowa has the history, but they were poor last week in pass protection, but they did provide for an adequate running game. Tulsa's line did not stand out to me - not terrible, not fearsome. Slight edge Iowa. Tulsa's RBs are ahead of Iowa's as are the WRs. Their H-back who led the nation in receptions from that position was targeted double digit times & had 1 reception. The TEs for Iowa are hyped for potential, but they haven't proven nearly as much on the field including last week.
In the end, I expect Iowa to improve, most notably VandenBerg. He'll be more accurate on the short routes. However, I do not believe this will translate to Iowa's offense performing that much better as a whole. I still laugh watching one of Iowa's first trips in the red zone - it was third & 6 and they ran an underneath route for 4 yards then settled for the field goal. Get used to this Eye fans. The Texas faithful were being honest about Davis.
