I keep hearing people moan about how Jaylin Noel isn’t nearly as good as Deshaunte Jones. So, tired of what seems to be blatant disrespect for one young man, I thought I’d look it up, to see if there is any realistic bias for such an attitude.

Deshaunte’s freshman year, he caught 37 passes.

Jaylin’s freshman season, he caught 39 passes.

Huh. Hmm. So…what about their respective sophomore seasons?

In 2017, Deshaunte caught 28 balls in 13 games.

In 2022, Jaylin caught 60 in 12 games.

Huh. Are you serious, Clark?

In Deshaunte’s junior year, he made 43 catches, with four touchdowns.

Somehow I think that Jaylin is going to surpass that this fall. So…please feel free to stop bashing the poor kid. Whom I see is now a team captain.

Oh…And as far as “wide receiver development”…I’d say he’s doing okay.

problem with your comparison is that until Deshaunte's senior year we had NFL talent at TE, RB, and WR. And he still had the same production as Noel, who only had to compete with Hutch for that. Deshaunte Jones was a great player.
Now I get that the QB wasn't great last year but to sit here and say that Jaylin will have the same trajectory as Deshunate is crazy. I think Jaylin will be better this year, but Deshaunte is a great player. He also had one of the best catches in the past 20 years I've seen against TCU in 2019.

It's honestly pretty jarring to me how people seem to feel about Jaylin. He's had an overall very good start to his career at ISU and will likely be a big part of the offense the next couple of years.

People will reference two things in particular, drops and avoiding contact. Drops for the most part are not a sticky (predictive) stat, in fact if you're dropping balls it usually means you're at least on the right track because you're getting open enough to get thrown the ball.

As for the contact thing, I genuinely believe it's an aesthetic problem but not a real problem. People should watch the clips of Tyler Lockett last year straight up just going down to not take hits, I'm not saying he's Lockett but getting your head taken off to prove a point about toughness will not help your team win.

Excited to see Jaylin continue to grow as a player, and it sounds like he's becoming a great leader for the young offense, too.

28 catches is the “same production” as 60? Gotcha.

And that’s with a…as you put it, “bad quarterback”.

I’m not the one being “crazy”. He’s already AHEAD of Deshaunte’s curve.

I've always thought they were very similar players, but surprised looking at the numbers almost exactly the same production.

This. People know a dogg when they see one. Deshaunte was a dogg 100% of the time. Jaylin hasn’t shown that yet.

Jaylin has made plays that we’re there for the most part. He’s had drops and avoided some contact but mostly if a 10 yard play was there he was getting 10 assuming he made the catch. Deshaunte made plays that weren’t there. He was a difference maker as a TRFR despite having NFL guys in the room. Deshaunte made more guys miss his first year out of HS than Jaylin has in two years.
