Jantz named the starter

I hope Steele has improved his decision making in the zone-read game. Jared really excelled at when to keep and when to give. With his natural running ability if he can run the zone-read as effective as Barnett he could really do something special for us.

No surprises here. I expected Jantz to be the starter all along. The best thing is that if Jantz struggles, we always have Barnett to fall back on just in case. It could be worse: we could be splitting reps like Texas is doing with Ash and McCoy.

You guys are taking it out of context. It was more of a compliment to Barnett then it was a jab at Jantz.

Exactly. Taking comments out of context has become an art form (or more likely a function of stupidity) with way too many here.

Yeah, and I don't like that. The press release, to me sounded pretty wish washy and I don't like throwing a guy in there to "test" him, so to speak. If he's your guy, he's your guy. I'm not saying for the whole season, but you can't just pull him if he has a bad first half, IMO.

There is nothing wishy washy about CPR's announcement on cyclones.tv. If any of you subscribe check that out before you panic. He definitely made it clear that Jantz was his guy and he had earned the position by being the best in all phases of QB play.

Hope he does well.

But I am far more nervous with Steel starting than I would with JB.

I kind of feel the same way. It's funny to me, but this is how I looked at the QB situation.

JB starts: "Well, our D is going to have to be in top form, because we have a steady, paced O that isn't going to score a lot o points." Nervous about game.

SJ starts: Well, our D is going to have to be in top form, because my experience with SJ says we'll have turnovers that turn into points for the other team. Just hope is late game heroics can be found again." Nervous about game.

I really believe that if SJs decision making has improved we will be in really good shape. I can't wipe away the memories of last year though and always digging a hole right off the bat. Love the fact that we have a QB now, let's get to some football.

Doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement from Rhoads. Sounds like "I had to pick a starter so I am going with Jantz but if that doesn't work out we have Barnett"

That's what I thought too when I read it. (Sounds like he is going to be playing two QBs, especially if one is not performing/turning the ball over.) - Well, I was all for Barnett to start, (I feel he is the better QB and played better last season, won Big 12 games/played tougher opponets as a Freshman) but this is Jantz's big chance. Take care of the ball man, and WIN.

Injuring his ankle was not the cause of his struggles.

Pre-injury first quarter stat line of 0-4, 3 INT. He is psychic!

Either way, I hope he has learned to harness his talents better this year and can succeed on the field. No doubt he is a dynamic player but it doesn't mean anything if he tries to force it.

I think that right now people are remembering Steele's late game heroics but forgetting why they were needed. I hope this means he is greatly improved and those heroics won't be needed.

Or maybe the coaches found a hypnotist that has promised to convince Steele before every drive that there are five minutes left in the fourth quarter and we are down by 8.

I think with a year under his belt to learn the system and a simplified playbook from Messingham will allow Jantz to make better decisions. General agreement seems to be that SJ is a better athlete, but makes worse decisions. If Jantz is completing more than 60% of his passes and not turning the ball over, this could be a real good offense.

Based on what we saw last year I am nervous. I am interested in seeing the Offense under Messingham and how the QB play improves. Herman seemed to be more of a schemer than Coach, and Courtney seems to be more of a teacher. Hopefully, Steele can be our Superman.

My guess is that he has learned the zone read and the playbook. He knows the speed of the game and has had a year of experience of Big XII football to rely on. I'm assuming that he won't come out and be the same QB he was at the beginning of last year. (At least I hope he's developed) I'm excited!

I also wonder if CPR sees 2013 as Richardson's year. If Jantz and JB are even this year, he can start Jantz this year and transition to Richardson next year without the politics of "dethroning" a starting QB.

We're probably a .500 team if he accomplishes one of those two. Both would make this team dangerous.

This is true in the UNI game (his first D1 game ever) and the UConn game (1st road game in D1). The Iowa game heroics were not the fault of Jantz if I am remembering the game correctly. Those were not QB related issues.

To think that a QB is going to perform the same way he did in his first ever D1 game and 1st ever D1 road game to me seems naive. I have no doubt based on Rhoads comments that he is MUCH better than he was at that point. The guy has had a full year now since those games in the system.

I think I see what you are saying, but I think it would be crazy to base your starting QB for an entire season on who is coming up and might be a strong candidate for the following year. CPR made it clear in the cyclones.tv interview that Steele graded out as the strongest QB in all phases of the job. A little of that may be coach speak to quiet the debate and pump up his guy, but I think Coach has been pretty upfront about more sensitive issues than this.
