Jamaica

We went to Mo-Bay a couple of years ago. We did Dunn River falls near Ocho Rios. That is worth the trip down there. Definitely go up to Negril. It has a beautiful beach. Rick's cafe up there is fun too.

Our zip line tour was fun. We went to Bob Marley's home town. It was neat but probably not worth the long and crazy drive unless you're a huge fan.

By the way, they love it when you pick up their lingo. I felt kind of weird because it felt like we were insulting them but they really get a kick out of it and will actually be offended if you don't attempt to pick up their culture.

Don't make eye contact with the vendors if you don't want to get pressured into buying something you don't want. Just look straight ahead and keep walking. I got pretty good at it.

And if you get a chance try to find a place to get jerked pork/chicken. Really really good.

Oh, since you're staying at sunspree, there is a good jerk place across the street. So cross the street to where those shops are and go right for a block or two. The place is a little scary looking but one of the best jerk places in town. And it's within walking distance. Take a group of people with you and you'll feel a little safer. :)

My wife and I visited Jamaica 5 years ago on our honeymoon and had an amazing time. We visited while on a cruise. We didn't want to pay the expensive fees that the cruise line was charging for excursions, so I looked online and found my own alternative. It was SOOO worth it! If you want the best island experience, you should get ahold of Phil Lafayette tours and have him show you Ocho Rios. For $55/person you get to do a TON of fun stuff like visiting Dunn's River Falls, getting a nice tour of the city/mountains from an actual local, visiting Fern Gully, inner tubing down the Blue River, shopping...all in the span of like 4-5 hours. It was amazing. Phil is a really funny tour guide and if we ever make it back, we will do the same again! I've included the link to his site.

Ocho Rios Tours and Excursions in Jamaica With Phil Lafayette

There's a telephone number on the Contact Us page on his site if you want to make sure to get ahold of them before you leave. Have fun, I'm jealous!!

Two thoughts:
1) Buy us tickets
2) Tell your cab driver that you want to see Border Jerk Chicken. It's out there a ways, but it's awesome.

Sweet Spice has some nice authentic Jamaican food, too. When we ate there, you got your meal + pop for $4 (American). You don't leave hungry....

Most important advice I can give to you. Try the rum cream. It is a jamaican drink like baileys but much better. Save some space in your bag to bring back a bottle or 4.

We were just in Jamaica in January. We stayed at Couples (I'll never go anywhere else after having them!) all inclusive in Negril. We had some friends that went to Dunns and said they were rushed through almost like an assembly line. So take that for what its worth.

Definitely go to Rick's Cafe! I go to cliff jump there.

I agree we took back some banana rum creame when we went to Jamaica for our honeymoon, I would also recomend the jerk chicken and Dunn's River Falls

Just got back yesterday. JA was a great time! Weather was perfect everyday --90 and sunny-- and mingling with the locals was hilarious, and our excursions rocked.

Jamaica would not be a great place for a vegetarian.. jerk chicken, jerk pork, jerk everything! Loved it!

We did zip-lining, river tubing, and took a catamaran/party boat to Dunns River. by the end of the week, i couldnt respond to a question without saying Yah Mon.

Thanks for all the advice/suggestions.

I didn't want to start a new thread, but CycloneErik and I made it safe last Saturday. We're enjoying nice days and rain in the afternoons. We've gotten our fill of Jamaican home cooking between chicken, burgers, chop soy, and fruit!!

And I woke up to a nice cool day to celebrate my birthday :) The classes are going well and I'm arms deep in sorting library books.
