Jake Campos Injured

Can you tell me where you're seeing this, that you have to miss 2 seasons due to injury?

I've always known the medical redshirt requirements to be that you can't play more than [30%] of the games in a season, and can't play in the second half of the season.
I think that's the correct percentage of games.

Is football different from other sports? Naz just got a medical redshirt in basketball for last season. He didn't miss 2 seasons.

Maybe this has changed or like I said, is different for football.

Short version:
A "regular" redshirt must be 100% no playing during a season.
A "medical" redshirt can play 30% of a season and then get injured. This is used to play a 5th season after losing at least 70% of a previous season to injury.

BUT -- the big deal is the 6th year of eligibility. For this, you must show that 70% or more of 2 separate seasons were lost due to injury.

Of course, you can still apply. And there are exceptions (somewhat rare). But those are the rules.

IIRC Case Keenum was able to prove an injury for his freshman redshirt year, thus having 2 seasons lost due to injury.

Ok that confirms what i thought. Thanks for posting.

Can ISU still recruit an open transfer for this position? Is there a calendar date where you can no longer add new players to the roster?
Not that this answers your question, but Jhaustin Thomas was added really late last season, I want to say maybe the 3rd week of fall camp?

I think that's incorrect. Pretty sure he was here by first practice and his addition was discussed at length at media day last season.

Yeah I should have looked it up first. Just knew it was much later in the year. Probably more similar to Bobek.

Also, I'm sure of one thing. This was discussed with the full team this morning with concept of "next man in". This staff had to play Northen Ill one year with a fourth string QB who was a receiver who ran the wildcat formation at qb only. It was for spot in MAC championship game. The team fought the entire game and lost by less than one TD to a ranked opponent. I was impressed with the character all showed from Campbell down.

I'm not happy w/ the injury, but still feel the staff will get the most out of the available players on oline.

I have a lot of hope for Campbell but you can't "next man in" forever. There is a reason those next guys aren't playing.

And it's not similiar to last year at Toledo either - Manning and Campbell recruited all of those guys and groomed them over the course of several years. ISU is looking to replace starters with freshman, an oft-injured grad transfer, and walk-ons.

Here:

-A medical redshirt can only be used when a standard redshirt has not.
-If you lose two seasons to injury (less than 30% of games played), you have a really good case for a 6th year waiver which is not the same thing as a medical redshirt.

So, Campos would have to get hurt for another season to qualify. Right now, no chance.

It's my opinion that a lot of freshmen should have season ending injuries if they aren't going to play.

If it would of been the second or maybe third string QB I may agree with you. It was a high school QB who had been mostly a receiver who ran the wildcat. Playing QB in game to decide league championship participant. That my friend is an amazing example of next man up! Was not last year. It was two or three years ago, I forget when exactly....oldtimers.
