Who cares about the uniform or the helmet. I want a team that can win games. I don't care how flashy we look or cool the uniforms or helmets are. I will watch regardless of what they have on. I do think we need to get a look and stay with it. We don't needs any of this flip flopping over the past 20 years. Its like the Iowa Hawkeyes, they are recognizable because they stay with the same thing. As much as I hate them they have the right idea.
I'm curious to find out how expensive some of these guys think uniforms actually are because clearly a few of them have lost all basic understanding of the price of goods.
Wiinning games will take care of attracting more and better recruits. Look at Alabama, Penn State and Nebraska (in their heydays). They rarely use alternate unis but they win / won alot of games and they get plenty of caliber recruits. If we start winning we won't need flashy uniforms.
Or you could get the uniforms to help attract some better recruits to get those wins to get better recruits.
Look at the AP top 25 that was just released. I counted 6 teams on there that haven't had some sort of special alternate uniform for one game or multiple games.
The times are a changing and it is time to get on board. Even traditionalist like Notre Dame, Nebraska and Michigan do this.
I am sick of the "Alabama doesn't do it so we don't need to argument" Alabama doesn't do it because they compete for national titles and have for decades. Stop comparing us to a program that isn't even in the same stratosphere as us.
That's an unrealistic way to look at it. Alabama has immense history and location on their side, Penn State and Nebraska were in their heydays in the 80's and 90's - times are different now. If you look at the programs that have come from complete obscurity into prominence over the last 10 - 15 years they all have one thing in common, flash or sex appeal for the lack of a better term.
Downplaying the importance of things such as jerseys (as trivial as it would seem to most of us, myself included) is showing a lack of understanding of the current landscape of college football. Flash sells to recruits and you aren't going to win those games to build a program on without them.
It's more realistic to say that Kansas had some crazy blinged out alternate uniforms and they're still Kansas football than to say we should stay traditional because Alabama does.
In all honesty it's not going to do much for ISU football either way. Possibly sell a little more gear if the alternate jersey's are marketed to fans like crazy but that's about it. Winning is the only thing that takes this program to higher levels, KU didn't soar because they got debatably ugly modernist unis. The one time they did kick ***** it was just in their plain old unis they've always had.'
Honoring Jack Trice's memory actually probably does more for the program and fans than just going bling for the sake of bling. It's not like we're going to get highly coveted recruits who pick the school with the most bells and whistles in college football.
They are doing special "black-out" uniforms this year. I also feel like they wear a throwback uniform every couple of seasons. They also change their helmet decals to american flag chickens and camo chickens iirc
nearly every program in the country has new alt jersey's, what will it take for some people here to admit they help recruiting?
I brought up the budget topic, but I didn't suggest it's "unaffordable," just not cheap, so cost may be a factor in how quickly (or frequently) alternates can be added. Recent estimates by ADs/equipment managers put a full set of helmets somewhere around $30K.
And we have a 70 million dollar athletic budget. 30k is a drop in the bucket.
I think you should enlighten us on how much a set of uniforms and helmets would cost.
If I remember right I didn't like the KU alternative uni at all, so I'm sure we could do a better job. I like almost every one of the alternatives shown on this site far better. And I think a lot of money could be made if we had a new more modern jersey to sell to the public. Imo the current one with the longer stripe looks too much like the former, and I'm waiting for a whole new look before I buy another authentic jersey. If we don't have a big turnaround this year I may not have to wait long, but I would much rather see us have a good year and still juice things up in the uni area next year.

Helmet + pants + jersey + socks = 470. 470 x 95 (max amount of players that can be dressed at home games) = $44650. If you want to get fancy you can throw in another $20 per for facemasks and shoes would obviously fluctuate with style and whatever quantity cost you could finagle.
The next step would be to take that budget surplus provided by the AD and throw it away. It's worthless. Athletic department accounting is completely open to interpretation and the numbers they give really don't mean a damn thing.
It is in no way that they can't afford to join in on the gear craze that is college football, they just refuse to. It doesn't make a lot of sense, drop well over 100 million on program improvements and then hit a financial brick wall on a cost under 50k?

I totally agree with what you are saying, but they would have to outfit more than just 95 guys. Unless you know exactly which 95 guys you are going to dress when you order the uniforms. Everybody on the team would need an alt uni.
That said... your point stands. Cost would still be a drop in the bucket.
