Jack Trice throwback uniforms again?

1) Liking the uniform(s) you are going to wear for the next 4 or 5 years doesn't necessarily make a player the "all about me" type. That is a pretty broad generalization.
2) If you spend any time with kids or around youth sports, and not just football, you will see that uniforms and how you look matters.

Why do you think Nike and UA have spent so much money developing cool looking shoes, undershirts, gloves, and now full uniforms. People buy cool looking stuff. Go watch a youth football game anywhere from K-12 and you will see all kinds of flashy uniform accessories. How anyone can say it doesn't matter is beyond me.

I'm not saying it doesn't matter. I'm saying that you first need to understand what the school's identity is and what kind of young man (not boy) you are trying to recruit to your program. ISU is salt of the earth, not glitz and glamour.

From a sheer marketing perspective, Iowa State has a unique story to tell the NATION and that is that Jack Trice Stadium is the first and still only (I believe) major stadium to be named after an African American. The story of how he died from injuries on the field is a story that resonates with young black men everywhere and particularly in the South.

The UNIFORM that best tells that story and are UNIQUE are the Jack Trice throwbacks. I am suggesting we milk that for all it's worth because we don't have the budget to rotate uniforms each game. Getting TV visibility on that will help draw interest from recruits who respect the game and what ISU stands for. The last I checked we don't have a Phil Knight or UnderArmour donating the uniforms.

We would look like ketchup bottles like that. The McCartney-era red/red/red blood clot wasn't a good look.

We already have/have worn six options with the current set:

Cardinal-Cardinal-Gold
Cardinal-Gold-Cardinal
Cardinal-Gold-Gold
Cardinal-White-White
Cardinal-White-Gold
Cardinal-White-Cardinal

That's plenty of options. I wouldn't mind seeing a white helmet for an all-white set as a special thing, or maybe white helmets or white jerseys and cardinal/gold pants, but, yeah, we've already got options.

This brings to mind a thought I've had as I have read & posted in recent uniform threads (including the "Utah new helmet" thread).

It appears that, among those who support uniform variety, we have a divide in CF fanbase (mostly) between two basic ideas: (1) Desire for expanded alternate options, within the current design (for the most part) and (2) Wish for radical design change, due to dislike of the current look.

I don't think either opinion is "wrong," but on occasion Category 1 people are painted as hyper-purist.

I'm curious which category our uniform-watchers most closely identify.

Most schools don't have a Phil Knight so that's a ridiculous statement. Uniforms don't require a T. Boone or Phil Knight like donor or only a few teams would have them. Additionally, changing up the uniform creates revenue from an apparel standpoint so it's not just throwing money away with no return on the investment. The issue isn't money, it's stubborn coaches/AD. Also, if you look at my previous comment I said we should utilize the "Trice Stripes" from that mock up in our uniforms because they are unique to ISU and bad ***. So we can agree on that anyway.

The fact that you are clinging to your point of view by stating that "boys" like the cool uniforms, not the kind of "men" we want is just a weak argument. Are you telling me that we don't want the kind of recruits that Oregon, Baylor, TCU, etc. get? I don't think many will agree with you on that one.

Jesus dude, you assume a LOT of things. YOU are the one that brought up Nike and UnderAarmour and I am pointing out your flawed assumption that the schools that utilize those donated uniforms are Oregon and Maryland. Do you have a clue how much ISU would have to spend since we don't have those donors? It's money we don't have, I can assure you.

As I said, we have plenty of alternate uniforms with our current configuration, as others have pointed out, to add interest to the athletes. IMO, the Captains should have a say in what color scheme they get to wear each week along with CPR, who you are referring to as being stubborn.

Maybe just maybe, he wants their focus on Football and not their Uniforms they wear that week.

If you don't think adding some great uniform combinations would at least give us a chance at stealing a recruit or two from mid level teams then you are sniffing glue. If has been proven that recruits go for the bling and for championship caliber teams.

Proven? Where has this been proven? Lol

My goodness... and that's why you guys have zero clue.

It's really comical.

Even KU has like 4-5 different uniform/helmet combinations. Establishing a brand/identity is important, but we don't even have 2-3 options that we can show off. It seems like a pretty obvious way to gain some extra capital on the recruiting trail (where we are really outclassed by all of our peers in the conference). The fact that Rhoads and/or Pollard refuse to bite is really baffling to me.

Funnel logo may be associated with bad times but a large portion of the younger alumni, current active students, and future students probably couldn't tell you who Jim Criner or Jim Walden are. Leave the dwelling in the 80's for the Hawks, that's their thing.

If a recruit needs a unique uniform to choose a school they are 1. Immature or 2. Not self motivated or 3. A Prima Donna and not the right type of Blue Collar kid we need at ISU.
The Jack Trice throwbacks should be worn once a year to bring awareness of the Jack Trice story. THAT is a recruiting tool/ story that is unique to ISU!Wear them for Texas I say.

duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I really don't get why we don't just get white helmets.

Maybe they're working up to that (and gold helmets as well, we can hope). Expansion of alternate options is most likely budget-dependent. (Helmets aren't cheap).

Get those two additional helmets, and we already have cardinal, white and gold for jerseys and pants, plus Trice-alt. (Many of us want a redesign, but assume there would be one regardless).

Ames high got chrome helmets for alternates. I think iowa state can afford white helmets...

AGREE!!! I like the solid colors Cardinal on Cardinal or Gold on Gold. We obviously need to do something to get better recruits. Once again we will start doing this stuff 5 years from now when changing up uniforms will become "old news". Look how bad are football facilities were compared to the rest of the league and then once we finally upgraded them it's only good enough to compare them the same as most other schools in the league!

More uniform and helmet options and Bawitdiba as a intro song

And as an alt... the Trice stripes pants and gold helmet with the cyclone is a must....just make it happen already
1. Need to have at least 4 Uni options.

2. No more Smoke on the Water intro.

When you are building a program and brand you don't go switching your look each game. We are not Oregon, we are iowa State. As someone else already pointed out we already have 2 versions of throwbacks and many other combinations we can use to change things up.

I like our current jerseys and feel like the Trice story is an OBVIOUS marketing tactic we should use at least once a year. Those uniforms stand out on nationally televised games, and will get kids interested in ISU, especially Black athletes in the South.

Ask Bill Snyder how sticking to a brand has worked for him. We don't need a gimmick, we need mature players who understand what being a Cyclone is all about, not campaigning for our Fashion Merchandising majors to wack out our unis. Work with the gymnastics team if you are dead set on creating new uniforms.

Yes ask Bill Snyder about having something that is over the top...check out their new athletic facilities and locker room lol. Even ol' Bill knows you have to compete with those other schools bling in some ways. Take a look at our huge score board, the new stadium expansion, etc. We are already trying to compete in different ways, new uniform choices would just be adding to that.

We are Iowa State, believe me I know, I was basically born and raised on campus, but until we start stealing some recruits out from under some other schools we will remain where we are.

Look good play good. A lot of young athletes feel that way and are very materialistic. They want sweet uniforms, a nice stadium, state of the art facilities, and wins.

Has ole Bill changed his uniforms? Does he attract the type of man to his program he wants? Yes. That's the topic. He has stated on radio that he looks for certain traits in his recruits including discipline and maturity. Their success has nothing to do with uniforms.
As others have pointed out, we already have 3 helmets, 4 pant colors and 4 jersey colors to choose from. That's more than enough without paying Nike a fortune for another set. Whether we use them is up to the coaches.

duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Nice maturity. Follow along now. The topic was adding more uniforms. Why would we do that and Dilute the most unique uniform and story maybe in all of college football? The Jack Trice throwback. That's my point. I hope to God you didn't graduate from ISU because responses like yours are an embarrassment.
