1) Liking the uniform(s) you are going to wear for the next 4 or 5 years doesn't necessarily make a player the "all about me" type. That is a pretty broad generalization.
2) If you spend any time with kids or around youth sports, and not just football, you will see that uniforms and how you look matters.
Why do you think Nike and UA have spent so much money developing cool looking shoes, undershirts, gloves, and now full uniforms. People buy cool looking stuff. Go watch a youth football game anywhere from K-12 and you will see all kinds of flashy uniform accessories. How anyone can say it doesn't matter is beyond me.
I'm not saying it doesn't matter. I'm saying that you first need to understand what the school's identity is and what kind of young man (not boy) you are trying to recruit to your program. ISU is salt of the earth, not glitz and glamour.
From a sheer marketing perspective, Iowa State has a unique story to tell the NATION and that is that Jack Trice Stadium is the first and still only (I believe) major stadium to be named after an African American. The story of how he died from injuries on the field is a story that resonates with young black men everywhere and particularly in the South.
The UNIFORM that best tells that story and are UNIQUE are the Jack Trice throwbacks. I am suggesting we milk that for all it's worth because we don't have the budget to rotate uniforms each game. Getting TV visibility on that will help draw interest from recruits who respect the game and what ISU stands for. The last I checked we don't have a Phil Knight or UnderArmour donating the uniforms.
