It's amazing.

Until UNI beats Maryland and heads to the Elite 8.. lol

We have 2 20 win seasons since 1997.... we need to quit acting like we have been good in anyone's recent... or distant history.

I don't recall saying anything about this.......only stating those teams were better than what UNI has had thus far. We did what we did in the freaking Big XII as opposed to dominating the Valley.

we've never been outstanding... but for 20 years and 4 coaches between 1985 and 2005 we made it to the ncaa tourney 12 times, or just under 2/3 of the time. Include the NIT and you see we've made the postseason much more than not in the 20 years prior to McDermott.

Sure, we're not a team with a long pattern of sweet 16s, but we definitely were a consistent tourney-making team.

But Greg Mcdermott isn't their coach!

Dude, seriously.

If ISU was in the Sweet 16, I guarantee no person would give 2 craps about UNI. And, people would be absolutely drooling over McDermott. Unfortunately, ISU can't even win half their games, so we need something to cheer about.

If you looked at this site today, it sure seemed like there was a larger majority of Cyclone fans willing to unite behind the overall good fortune of the Panthers today than our own team towards the end of the season.

Just my observation, but it's odd seeing our fans take more joy in a Northern Iowa win than Iowa State wins, including the K-State win.

i think a lot of it is the way the players of uni play. i became absolutely disgusted by the way our team played all season long: incredibly selfish, no help defense, terrible 1 on 1 isolations, constant sulking/complaining, backing down from competition, terrible fundamentals, and a lack of a team identity.

uni players play as a team. they rely on each other and have confidence in everyone else on the team to fulfill their role. also, they did not complain, they just continued to play hard. and how many times did ku try to drive only to get stopped by a uni player. the amount of effort uni plays with makes it very easy to unite behind even though they are not my team.

me too, i just sloughed it off because we played arguably the most fundamentally sound team in the nation, DUKE....against nebraska and colorado, it showed, then i knew we were in trouble....

Not only do they play hard but they also play smart. We have never really put those two together for long stretches of time during the Mcdermott era.
I still don't understand how a team with Sherron Collins, Cole Aldrich, and Xavier Henry loses to a team featuring Kerwin Dunham, Lucas O'Rear and numerous other guys who were given a minimum or no ranking by scouting services.
It's so hard not to look at their situation and compare it to ours. Its obvious we are bringing in more talent, although the gap is shortening, and we just aren't developing players the same way Jacobson and co. is. Disappointing.

I'm really not sure about this.

Ahelegbe v. Garrett: I take Ahelegbe in a heartbeat
Farokmanesh v. Christopherson: Close. But after this season I take Ali.
Moran v. Giltsrap: Totally different players, but Gilstrap is way better.
Koch v. Brackins: NBA upside, Brackins. College player? Probably still Brackins (note: if this was Koch v. Gilstrap, I'm probably taking Koch)
Egleseder v. Hamilton: Give me Egleseder in a close one.

Basically, besides Brackins for Moran, there isn't a guy on UNI's starting 5 I'd trade for our starting 5 this past year.

The problem is that we had too many individuals and they have a "team". We were too prone to rely on Craig or Gil to get it done.....whereas UNI has a team that anyone can kill you at any given time. Hell even J.Moran hit a big late 3 for them. Just my opinion though.

Sure, that too. But I'm saying, even individually, I think UNI had a better team this past year.

I agree with you on that but alot of our issues I think were more chemistry than not having good players. I look at all these teams in the tourney that are smaller schools and wonder how they got some of these great players but then I think that those schools were better "fits" for those guys. Wes Johnson was only like a 2 or 3 star guy out of high school but he became a great player when he just fit in a system rather then be forced to be the main guy.

Players look a lot better when they actually spend three or four years in a program....

Oh, I'm not claiming to know why people are leaving. All I know is that it's damn hard to have continuity which is an ingredient to chemistry when the team is a revolving door.

ISU won a meaningless game over KSU, we still ended up 4-12 in the Big 12

UNI beat the number 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament to reach the sweet 16

UNI's accomplishment was much bigger, thats why it's a bigger deal

the thing is uni relies on defense. sure craig or gil may be able to score (and pretty inefficiently), but they are not nearly as competent at defense. our whole entire team is not competent at defense. i mean kansas had to work for every single thing and kansas turned over the ball quite often. and that is uni's team identity, their defense.

amen brother. everyone needs something to cheer for.

What was there to root for all year except the win over KSU? Dude we finished under .500 with our best team since the the LE era.

see this is the problem, this wasn't our best team since the LE era, but people think it is so when they perform just to their ability, it still isn't good enough.

it takes really good guards to advance in play in march and we had DG and scotty, that doesn't scare opposing coaches. Then we have gilstrap, good player, yes. But almost every team in the big 12 has somebody to his ability, no mis match there. That leaves us with craig, he scares coaches if he gets going, problem is most nights he doesn't, and because our guards aren't hard to guard they can focus on craig, thus taking our only advantage against our opponent away.

You're right but I guess I should have said, "it's obvious we are bringing in higher regarded recruits."
