It could have been worse

It could've been worse. Baylor left a lot of points on the field in the first half, as did ISU. I'm disappointed but not surprised at the outcome. Baylor's just loaded with athletes and talent. I don't know if they'll win the conference, but it's definitely them and OU in a two horse race, and everyone else is playing for third place.

For those who didn't like the article, I get it. You're ****** about your team getting beat up.

But not for one second last week did I think Iowa State would win this game. Heck, I thought Baylor would cover handily.

The headline is true. That one could have been a heck of a lot worse.

I wasn't happy with Iowa State's performance but to me, the fact that they didn't roll over and die was encouraging.. Lose 71-1 again (what it was looking like at the break) and it's a demoralizing defeat that could hinder the rest of the season.

That didn't happen though.

Moral victory? I guess. But I will take that compared to what I expected to occur so I'll take it.

I knew we had no chance of beating Baylor. Friend and I went just to watch Baylor. Iowa State played better than I thought they would, but Baylor has so much more speed, size, and athleticism that we needed a lot of breaks to stand a chance. People need to get over themselves and move onto the next game.

Also, Baylor barely beat the spread. And we held them under 50 points. I doubt many teams this year will be able to say that.

Are we going to ignore the fact that 3rd stringers were in almost the whole 4th quarter?

We all choose to give ISU credit for that. But if you were a neutral observer watching the second half, you might not think Baylor is as good as they're ranked. I don't.

See bolded part above ^. You are correct, but the problem is, the coaching staff felt the same way for the last two weeks as well, and that is not good.

In interviews with this coaching staff leading up to this game, you could tell they believed we had no chance to win the game. And some of the coaching decisions in the game made this crystal clear as well.

I seriously think Rhoads' goal going in was to not lose worse than 71-7.

Yep. ISU had zero margin for error to even have a puncher's chance and that went in the toilet with the passive first offensive series. Just can't give an offense like Baylor multiple opportunities with three and outs, short fields and turnovers. The defense gave it a go but there's just too much speed and talent for the Bears on offense. Early on it seemed like every tackle was a shoestring or a lunge from behind to save a chunk play. That's not sustainable. The offense had to put up some long drives and it didn't happen. Lots of things went wrong but they battled, so that's something. Flush it and forget it. Winnable game next week.

I hope nobody expected a win vs. Baylor. We honestly may not beat them for a long time with their style of offense, which doesn't let weak defenses catch up when they fall behind.

If I had to complain about 1 thing from tonight, it is that we have to be the worst tackling team in the country. Im not sure how many tackles we missed tonight.

We were over matched talent wise and never expected to win this. Even though it could have been worse the things that popped out to me were two execution issues (1) the terrible tackling you noted and (2) not being able to complete passes that required touch. The couple of long overthrows to open receivers down field and at least one little quick hitter to the sideline that was wide open but high and behind the receiver. Baylor tossed a dozen of those quick line of scrimmage passes and didn't kill the play before it even had a chance by tossing a pass the receiver couldn't even catch.

Bryce Petty wasn't under siege every time he dropped back either. Good pass protection will do wonders for a quarterback's accuracy.

Play Calls

We need to play to WIN!!

Running out the clock at the end of the first half was defeatist. We were down 35-7. Why play conservative? We had 50 seconds, 2 or 3 timeouts amd we were getting the ball first in the 2nd half. That was a chance to put up 14 points without Baylors offense playing a down.

As coaches, why not show confidence in your kids and take a small risk and throw 3 passes downfield? Protect the QB with 6 blockers and put 4 guys running routes 15+ yards. Roll Sam out to buy time. At worst we throw a deep interception. The upside is we score touchdowns on two consecutive possesions and make it a game at 35-21.

Conversely, we score a touchdown early in the 2nd half and Rhoads makes the high risk decision to attempt an on side kick.

We lost to Baylor...a top 10 team by a margin far less then most thought. Am I in to the whole moral victory thing? No, but damn people there's more butt hurt on this site day in and day out then your average anal porn site.(just assuming:wink:)
