ISU vs UNI postgame thread

Glad we got the W, wish we had that one in Hawaii, 6-0 would be pretty fun going into the next 3 games..

jsut got back to ames from UNI and wanna say good game to the guys tonight. Good to see Brackins show that he is truly a force to be reckoned with (hopefully he can carry it to the big XII) Good job to stay in the game and outlast the competition.

shame we couldn't get the 3-pointer going, but also good we showed ourselves we can win without it.

Good game and I'm looking forward to Saturday!

I wouldnt get over confident about Brackins success tonight though. UNI has absolutely NO presence in the paint. This was evident in the final minutes of the game and overtime (practically the whole second half), when every shot UNI took was a 3 ball.

Brackins can take it in from the paint...but can he pass? The kid could end up with fewer assists that RJ Summrall had touchdowns this season.

A good win for ISU, hope they can continue their success.

Watching a game in that place was not that great tonight. It reminded me of Carver, but obviously smaller. The UNI student section was bad and the place never really got loud. I'm very happy we won tonight. First time I have seen the Cyclones win on the road in a while. CB is a beast!! DG is going to be very good.

Does anybody else not think that the MVC school of UNI should be a rival...this is a school that we should dominate year after year...they have a huge disadvantage to us in recruiting...there is no reason we should be 1-7 against MVC schools. I mean if we have a true rival it should be Iowa and NOT Uni or Drake

OK. McD now has my attention.

We had a transition game and pushed the ball up the court.

The zone D was played very well. I still have too many visuals of the WM zone and players leaping through the air too late and in vain as an open 3 is launched. UNI may not have had the "touch" in this game, but that had more to do with ISU than it did UNI.

CB, with the exception of one short stretch, was strong with the ball and didn't rely on the fadeaways. And he rebounded big time.

DG is going to be great. I mean great. I really wish he would have gotten more minutes last year.

The overall success of this team is going to depend on ONE more player showing up and being a consistent contributor. We've got CB and DG that have pretty much been there every game - and sophomores. We've got role players that accept their role on the team this year. ONE more guy - and this team may get an NIT invite. MAYBE even a NCAA invite with a little luck.

But for the first time in McD's tenure, I'm seeing the ingredients and recent commits have me even much more positive.

You would think so but this is a new era of college basketball. I'm thankful for every win . . . don't forget, UNI is a good bb program at any level.

I'm not going to read this whole thread so maybe a lot this has been said already:

Great game last night. CB is THE MAN! He played exactly like I've always hoped. UNI came out with a game plan to STOP the 3 ball and they did exactly that. In order to do that well all night, though, they had to stay man to man which created all kinds of problems for anyone vs. Brackins.

Did anyone else feel like Brackins was laying off on defense, though, at McD's request to keep him clear of foul problems? Without Brackins, we aren't even in this game. So imagine if he had picked up some early fouls. It wasn't that he wasn't playing any defense but he sure didn't contest much or go for blocks. I'm fine with him doing that if it means he stays in the game and scores like he did.

Outstanding play near the end from Garrett. It seems as eveyone else gets slower through out the game, Garrett gets faster. He always seems to appear down the stretch.

I was disappointed with Lucca's play tonight. He did hit one of our few 3 pointers but he also turned the ball over a couple times and just didn't look good in the flow of the game. Hopefully, the knee doesn't remain an issue.

JVB played great off the bench.

Wes E really impressed me with this ball handling. I think he did get picked once but the kid can really handle the ball well for a shooting guard. I'd like to see Wes drive more and draw fouls after faking a 3. I think he shoots well from the free throw line.

As for UNI, once again, I'm amazed at how hard those kids played. There seems to be no difference between McD's style and Jacobsen's. The talent on UNI's roster is far below what ISU has, IMO, but Jacobsen gets everything out of each of his players. They had maybe 2 turnovers all game. The sticky defense had our shooters frazzled. UNI will do well again this year.

Lastly, it is really great to see McD finally get an MVC win and one against his former team. That was a big monkey on his back.

The difference between Garrett this year and last year is amazing. They don't even look like the same player. I don't know what he did or if it just came with experience but I hope he keeps it up.

Imagine him next year, though. I think he could easily be better than AT by then.

He already is...

Johnny Moran and his 5 points that he scored when he had to play a real team.... jesus. you are drinkin some UNI kool-aid. i dont think there is more talent now then there was under McD and i doubt there will be.

I think Moran is going to be a really good player and will give us fits over the next few years... Had his shot been falling AT ALL we would have lost this game. If we are going to play alot of zone this year, which I think we will have to, we HAVE to do a better job of stopping the dribble penetration and wide open three looks...

Yes. Especially after the other bigs picked up early fouls.

It's called parity my friend. No matter how much less talent MVC schools supposedly have they still compete against the bigger conferences and at least one or two of them make some noise every year. A lot can be said for the grit and determination on the kids that play in the smaller conferences. They usually out hustle and execute better than the bigger schools who rely a lot on talent and not the small things that can get W's. They also play w/a chip on their shoulder to try and show the bigger conferences that never give them any looks what they missed out on. Mix that w/it being where our coach was before he came here and it being an in-state school and no I have no problem w/UNI or any team in this state being considered a rivalry.

I was at the game last night. Just a few thoughts this morning as I enjoy a strong cup of coffee.

I was really impressed with Brackins attacking the hoop. He definitely looks stronger than last year. I still think he is a year away on strength and conditioning to be a monster.

As far as newbies - Wes is going to be a player. You can see the kid is a competitor and hates to lose. He is vocal on the court and not afraid to make a play. Vanderbeken had some huge blocks and a dunk down the stretch that really gave the team a spark. Hamilton didn't really impress me much. He has a big body and another year of strength and conditioning will really help him.

Lucca looked a step slow. He was out of control on offense and just looked like he was out of sync. He was trying to create off the dribble instead of spotting up and shooting. I don't know enough about his game to know whether creating his own shot is a strength or a weakness of his. He lost it out of bounds on one occasion when he tried to create, though. He also had an air ball that the fans were giving him a hard time about in the second half. He showed good leadership on the floor. At one point, Mac had him playing the 4!

Petey can jump! That kid gets up for rebounds. You have to wonder if he will still be getting all these rebounds in Big 12 play?

The McCloud Center is like a big high school gym. It is a nice facility - just seemed small. Parking was hell though - can't they pave some of their lots?

UNI only committed 3 turnovers during the entire game. That is a pretty amazing stat. ISU committed 12.

UNI is a tough minded team. I was impressed that our guys kept fighting and came out with a victory in overtime on the road.

I left thinking to myself - FINALLY! We put UNI back where they belong.

One thing I have wondered, especially because these refs seemed to call so many ticky tack fouls.

On the play that JVB had that block on the fast break, he obviously got the ball clean on the release but absolutely hammered the guy when they came down? How is this not some kind of a foul? I don't think it should be a shooting foul, since it is after the shot, but probably a player control foul... I've actually been wondering this for a while but this play reminded me...

Yeah, the 4 guards on the court at once was crazy. For the last 8 minutes of the game Haluska was playing the 4. He (and Eikmeier) did great in the zone at the end of the game.

One thing that I think Petey has going for him on rebounds is great (& strong) hands. It seemed like he had stickum on his hands, if he touched the ball at all he got the rebound.[/quote]

Though it's not really the case this year, the MVC hasn't been that far behind the Big 12 in basketball. They have fairly consistently been the best of the non-BCS conferences in basketball.

What I don't understand though is why does UNI seem to hate us more than they do Iowa? Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed a lot more vitriol from them towards us. 06Panther, any insight?
