ISU vs. Kent State

I enjoy Kool-Aid. Especially that watermelon flavor. I don't get what it has to do with football though. I'm going to say that the score will be 30-16, ISU wins. You can take that score to the bank and put it in a high yield account because is it dead on. Livin' la vida loca!

OK, week one issues:
Defensive, Missed Tackles
3 fumbles, ball security
Offensive line, timing issues (no sacks though)
Personal Fouls, mental/aggressive
Bates, struggled early but found a rhythm later

9 days to teach. All, but Bates' nerves, these are very teachable. Chizik made a point about tackling fundamentals all week at least by what you hear in his comments. If this team just fixes these things, they look much better, no matter who we are playing.

Knowing the improvements made by this team, from week 1 last year and Oklahoma last year, they proved that these coaches teach very well. There is more competition, the team knows the playbook, the true freshman are no longer unsure of what it's like in front of 47,000 people, on TV, at night...

Bates has got to want to start, and Arnaud doesn't want to lose that. You could say this about any position I'm sure. Based on the staff wanting to see what the two QBs can do with timing routes and distance routes, they start out passing much more. We have a ton of guys that can go the distance. JJ should be ready to play more than ever which motivates Scales and A-Rob all the more. RB and line are much more in sync this week. We may punt a couple times this week, but when you play a speedy over-pursuing defense you plan the misdirections, etc. We shouldn't score less than 28.

Form tackling, staying in your lanes, trust your teammates, just like you did against OU and Missouri last year, and defense keeps them under 14.

My prediction is 34 - 13 ISU, and this is done in a very business-like manner.

Go Cyclones!!!

I'm not saying I think it will be a blowout...but I can only assume the folks here that think it will be a close one score type game believe we have zero shot at Iowa next week. Because Iowa is much, much, much better than Kent St. and its AT iowa.

I'm just saying I hope the same folks predicting a close win don't come on here next week predicting a win over Iowa. How do people expect us to win a single conference game if we can't hanlde KSU by a comfortable margin? Seriously.

Um, we lost to Kent State last year and beat Iowa and won two conference games. They're not that bad. That said, ISU wins 27-10.

Kent State was awful last year and will likely be quite bad this year.

Yeah, but I certainly hope this year is nothing like last year. My point was that if people thought we'd barely take care of a MAC team what do they think is gonna happen when we get to the Big 12? I think we need to get some swagger back as a team and as a fan base. I'm not saying go over board but we should start showing some swagger as a fan base not 'I hope we beat Kent st.'.

Edelman and Jarvis looked pretty good (quick) against us last year. I guess we'll find out tomorrow if it was a case where we made them look good or they really are that good.

I think we win 31-17. I don't get people saying "take away all the turnover we got and the sdsu game would have been different." They were forced turnovers. We position and play for these. Jarvis ran for a little over 100 (116?) last year. I think we pound the ball early and spread it a little in the middle and pound it late.

The DL has to do a better job of getting off blocks. Kent State has 3 new starters including a true FR on the OL so the opportunity is there. Like any game, the key will be to win the battle in the trenches and come out ahead on turnovers.

I love my Cyclones, but where exactly is this "swagger" stemming from? A win over a 1-AA football team? A 3-9 season? I certainly hope I am proven wrong. But I think we need some things to hang our hat on before this swagger appears or else you may as well compare us to Husker fans.

Turning a program around not only requires a mindset change with the players, but also the fan base.

I couldn't agree with this more, and this same thing really bugged me before the SDSU game as well. All through the off season we have had thread after thread with people making predictions for this season. It seemed to me that the vast majority of us were in the 5-7 win range, with a couple sipping the kool-aid for 8 or 9. There seemed to be very few predicting less than 4.

Yet then along come the SDSU and Kent State games and it seems like people are coming out of the woodwork to predict one score barn burner games. Umm, if we don't drop these teams by double digits playing at home, just who the heck else do we beat? This is probably the most winnable game left on our schedule. Baylor and UNLV are certainly beatable, but we never make it look easy on the road. I really can't see calling for a loss in this game and predicting anything but a 1-11 season.

Our cupcake game stumbles last season were players learning a new system. I think the blowout last week was proof of that theory. And I also agree that changing the program requires a change in attitude for fans. We have to act like we expect to win games that we reallly should expect to win.

Clones. 28-13

Very well said.

I expect us to win this game. There is no reason not to at this point in time. If we are going to turn the corner with Iowa State Football we have to expect to win games when we play opponents from smaller conferences.

I expect us to win this game in a fashion that doesn't require us to open our playbook up too much and require us to strain ourselves in the 4th quarter. If we are fighting these guys tooth and nail in the 4th we have reason to worry. Look at Toledo, UNI, and UNLV from 2006. That should have been an indication of what was to come the rest of the season.

If we have to do that now, with this team that is in its 2nd year in a system and showed as much improvement at the end of last season and the start of this one. We should be very, very worried.

For those of you who hide behind them beating us last year. You are right, but I think you're missing one important factor. We were terrible. Absolutely abysmal last year. We played a very passive defense the whole game (and against UNI too) and an offense that looked like it knew no more than 15 plays. Compare that to now. They playbook is open, the players have it memorized, and we have a defense that would rather dictate the pace of the game than let it come to them. Vastly different mentality in only one year's time.

I'm not saying it won't be close, but if we want to change the face of Iowa State Football we need to be as enthusiastic about winning games as the players are. And we know they're fired up.

My prediction: 34-14 Iowa State.
