So I watch the Akron vs Penn State game and here is what I took away from it other than Penn State is really good:
1. On defense they really like to press the LOS. They caught the Penn State QB and RB in the backfield several times on the zone read. They also gave up several huge plays when they got loose.
2. QB was so so. Looks like he may have some arm strength issues after shoulder surgery last year. Under threw a couple guys, and didn't seem to have a ton of zip on his passes. (No pun intended) QB is not very mobile, not sure I saw him run at all, so it might not be horrible to send a blitz after him.
3. tOSU transfer running back is big and physical, but does not look particularly fast. OL struggled with the running game. They had a couple first downs in the second half running right at PSU. Hard to believe the PSU defense was really playing hard at 35 to nothing though. OL seemed to pass protect fairly well. PSU did not send a lot of blitzes.
4. Akron WR have pretty good speed, so ISUs DBs will need to keep themselves in front of them. PSU DBs were right on them most of the time, but I suspect that is just a matter on them being good.
5. Akron defense in general was not very good. Lots of passing lanes over the middle. I didn't see PSU burn them deep, but that was mostly because their QB missed some throws.
6. PSU exploited Akron's shorter DBs with their big wideouts and TEs.
7. The 52 - 0 was nowhere near as bad as the difference in these two teams. PSU was screwing around with a two QB set 8 minutes into the second half.
I look for ISU to cover plus some, but don't think it will be a blowout unless Montgomery or the WRs get loose multiple times.
