ISU Gambling Megathread

Fascinating to me. Like I said all along they underage gambled give the the fine. But nooooo they had to try to make it a bigger deal and it's going to all blow up big time in their face. IT WILL BE GLORIOUS!!

And this blows apart the argument that the sports books found it and turned it over to DCI, because per Van Plumb the sports books didn't even know the investigation was happening.
And that's freaking wild because the book(s) literally told their IT guys that their software had triggered it.

This is getting real weird.

@CloneLawman You’re going to be more knowledgeable in this area than a lot of us. Can you explain why a prosecutor in Dubuque County would be the one initiating the subpoena of GeoComply? Just seems weird to the rest of us.

I'm aware of that. That's why it was offered in the alternative, in case you didn't understand what you were saying regarding forum shopping. Please tell me how forum shopping for a judge works. I'd love your expert analysis.
I prefaced my comment with “To someone with no legal background at all”, I was saying how this looks to someone with no background at all.

Thank you for the snarkiness, though.

I guess I had assumed Dubuque was because that’s where the casino backing the app was located. So, if they needed the data, they went to a judge local to where that information was stored.

But the date discrepancy seems to be rather fishy.

Didn’t even think about that, but that’s probably correct. FanDuel is affiliated with Diamond Jo in Dubuque.

It is interesting. I don't have a specific reason, but there could be any number of reasons, including particular expertise, etc. Of course, if what the defense counsel is saying is true and bears out, then there was a lack of either follow through or expertise.
What about getting the search warrant from Pottowattamee County? Is that odd or perfectly normal in your opinion?

It boggles my mind why people are just taking the word of an attorney as if it is 100% fact. Maybe it is, but it's not his job to find the truth, it's his job to sew doubt.

Well he did put hard facts regarding dates in the filing and bring into question whether the information was obtained before it should have been.

100% agree. However, it does nothing to take away the fact that it was a targetted hit job on a very select group of people. Obviously the legality of how they obtained the information is being called into question, but the question of why do this at all still echoes in my head. I get it...gamble as an NCAA athlete is stupid, but my gosh, way to cause potentially millions of $'s worth of damage just to get your name out there.

Why investigate whether players are gambling on their own games?

Given how the football season is going, I’m looking forward to getting my fall entertainment from this real world, Law and Order: Gambling Unit

Ok, well who should we trust when there are attorneys on both sides?
