ISU Gambling Megathread

And why only athletes?

Seems like they only asked for the geolocation data specific to the athletic training facility. Low hanging fruit. Only athletes and support staff would be in those buildings.
If they asked for data from the whole city of Ames, you might get some low-hanging fruit (like if the account was registered to an 85 year old from Alabama), but - more likely there would be so much data it would be overwhelming. This is just me speculating, I have no inside knowledge.

Yes, but it wasn't an automated trigger. Someone *asked* for the data.

Can't help but wonder if someone at the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (where the data was viewed before the DCI asked for it) had a vendetta, bug in their craw, etc. against an athlete, group of athletes, or just athletes in general?

Some paper-pusher who couldn't make the varsity team at West Sioux??? :)

The guy is being interviewed on Murph and Andy in the first hour if you want to be even more pissed off.

Frustrating situation overall…

But this wouldn’t be such a big story if Kirk wasn’t incessantly complaining about Noah Shannon

It's low hanging fruit as location data from outside of the athletic facilities wouldn't trigger suspicion. That's kinda the whole point of the geofencing. The likelihood of people being in that designated area that are prohibited from placing wagers is extremely high. Had every one of these athletes who were using manipulated information done 100% of their wagering outside of the geofenced areas, their chances of being detected would have gone down considerably.

Except there is NO Iowa law that makes it illegal for legal aged people associated with the Athletic department (coaches, players, student managers) to bet on sports.

There is a law that says the betting company has to monitor for that but it is not illegal for the bettors.

Several months back, I read a SPECULATION that someone had a personal vendetta against one individual and they included both schools and all the athletes to disguise their personal attack against their target. A, see I wasn't going after this person specifically, but since they were involved, we have to include them in our investigation, type of attack.

We all wanted to believe this wasn't going to affect our season.. At this point, it's safe to say that it has and the players affected took our marginal roster to a D2 level on offense.

Don't like KF but he was right to stand up for him. Maybe our coaches should have done the same. Not exactly like athletes were throwing games...You could investigate any program in the country and you would find some small time gambling taking place.

I've always wondered if a cook or server could drip some raw chicken water on a few dinner salads before making a well timed wager. The DCI should investigate.

We can say "what if" all day long and it will not change anything, but you do have a great point.
