ISU Gambling Megathread

Better to address it now and suffer the ramifications of several athletes being kicked off the team than turn a blind eye to it...only for it for fester to a point where athletes are throwing games down the road for bigger payoffs.

What about the players that were borrowing their teammates phones and also gambling in the football players lounge?

Post the evidence that this happened and name the players. Serious accusations you are making. Haven’t heard those rumors. Make the accusations back it up with facts.

Has anyone (reporter, journalist, hack blogger/podcast host) asked the DCI any questions about this whole thing? The focus seems to be entirely on the universities and the student athletes. It seems fair to me that the DCI would have some sort of media availability about this case considering the time and effort they've put into investigating and prosecuting these alleged crimes.

I'd like to know how many non-student athletes they are prosecuting. Considering the quantity of athletes in the state they are pursuing, it stands to reason there are a considerable quantity of non-athletes that they would have also encountered doing the same things.

I'm not saying that being a student athlete is the same as being in a protected class under the law, but if the DCI is only going to charge athletes for their alleged underage and falsification of documents crimes, it seems to me that they are being too selective on who they enforce the law against.

Note:
I'll admit to not paying super close attention to this whole thing since it has dragged on and on all summer long. I've listened to all the CF and Iowa Everywhere podcasts so I imagine I'm about as updated as anyone as far as public information goes. Perhaps this has already been brought up and it completely missed me. My apologies if so.
I doubt they can comment on an ongoing legal case.

They are releasing info about Iowa State football players yet no one has seen any info on non-players. It's not "commenting on an ongoing case" in a negative way to simply say "this is a statewide investigation and not targeted to any one team."

It would be like a Rep DCI only releasing info on well-known state democrats. I'm not making this political, but that's the best example of a targeted investigation. It sure looks targeted.

Edit. I know people at work who has signed their spouse's name on phone contracts, and I know of one that did on a mortgage document. It just seems interesting all this popped up out of nowhere. Breaking NCAA rules isn't against the law and I doubt the DCI is scanning people's phones (also illegal) randomly. What tipped them off to even start this? And then, what tipped them off to investigate phone records? NCAA infractions don't typically involve law enforcement.

Well, if your next door neighbor’s 19 year old kid is involved, do you think the news media would care? The media is only showing players because that’s actually newsworthy

I would imagine the investigation would uncover many other instances of illegal gambling, but people don’t care to hear if it involves someone nobody knows

Part of me is very concerned that 25% of our starters are gone including QB, RB, TE, OL, and DL and part of me is saying “those starters won 4 games last year” and think we’ll be fine.
That's the problem anyway, they won 4 games.

The charges were not published or released by the DCI. The charges were filed by county district attys based on the DCI investigation, and are a matter of public record once they are filed. Those affidavits contained many alleged discoveries and results of the investigation by the DCI. The media got their info from these filings.

Probably been mentioned before, but what about the rest of the college athletes in the state. UNI, Drake, Central ........? I sure hope we find out how this whole investigation got started. BUT I'm sure we won't.

Lee- sucks, but I trust the staff historically at that position in terms of development

Hanika- was not that impressed last year tbh, and we have a ton of up and coming talent getting rave reviews

Remsburg- was often injured anyway

Dekkers- not a great season last year, supposed leadership issues

Brock- this one hurts the most. We have a lot of depth there, but it's unproven, and he was set to be a star

That's my optimistic analysis of why this won't impact our win total all that much. Add in predicted benefits from new coaching staff and incoming recruits and I am predicting more than 4 wins, potentially up to 7 or 8 if things really click. I'd say 6 wins is what I predict.

This may be over optimistic, but I don't really see a point in being all doom and gloom in August. I'm pumped to see this team gut it out.

Feels like some are acting like this is like losing Seneca or TD type of impact and I'm just not so sure.

If people want someone to blame, blame the legislature for legalizing it. It was entirely predictable there would be problems such as this.
The Legislature specifically did not have to allow betting on college teams in Iowa. The sports books basically got everything they wanted including a lower tax rate than most states.

I thought quite a bit about this and for some reason I’m relatively calm about the impact on the season. Brock was probably the biggest loss. But we do have depth at running back. Everything else this season is going to depend on the offensive line. The defense is going to be stout, and I have all the confidence in the world in their ability to shut down pretty much anyone. So, in a nutshell if the offensive line has developed as much as we all hope, this is a team that will definitely surprise some people this year. On top of that we may have gotten rid of some bad influences from a leadership standpoint.

I have to think we'll at least be better in situations where a QB has to scramble or needs to just get an easy yard or two to keep a drive alive. Dekkers was the slowest QB we had since maybe Bandhauer. I have no idea what people were seeing preseason to tell us he was going to be a running threat.
