ISU Gambling Megathread

Goodbye Kevin Dresser then too. I've come to feel that CMC is a bit between a rock and a hard place. Seems the AD's ought to take some blame when the problem is spread over multiple sports. There are a lot more football players though, so...
If people want someone to blame, blame the legislature for legalizing it. It was entirely predictable there would be problems such as this.

Yeah it doesn't matter whether it's legal or illegal, online or in casinos, or if it's a local bookie.

This is likely happening all across the country at every school, but most schools won't get investigated. Just ISU/UI.

It wouldn't surprise me if some other states end up having their own investigations. But I think we may end up being the warning case. Because I think a lot of people may not have realized just how sophisticated the sports books are at detecting violations like this. I think most of the players involved probably just assumed it was like sharing a streaming account where there would be no issues if they used a parent's login. This may be a wake up call to many that this isn't the case.

Though given the data tracking involved, if I was a player that had made any bets in the last couple years in another state I might be pretty worried right about now. Because if their state starts digging, they're going to find that old data, even if they dont gamble going forward after this warning.

So without going through all the twitter posts, news and this thread.
does anyone know if this is the final damage?

just trying to gage my expectations for this year.
had the high bar set at 6-7 wins and bottom feeder bowl game.
the low bar for me was winning 3-4 wins but see potential moving forward. (which is sad I know)

ISU is not in position to be losing starters before the season even starts. Maybe some of these Big12 teams won't be very good this year and we catch some of them.

I think it's a good thing that the DCI did the investigation. If gambling is going to be legal, it should be restricted to adults and kept as free from corruption as possible.

These infractions are totally disturbing, actually really piss me off. I've supported ISU football for well over 50 yrs. I was looking forward to this season. Then, along the way, find out that those whom I am supporting don't care about the team - only about themselves.

Has anyone (reporter, journalist, hack blogger/podcast host) asked the DCI any questions about this whole thing? The focus seems to be entirely on the universities and the student athletes. It seems fair to me that the DCI would have some sort of media availability about this case considering the time and effort they've put into investigating and prosecuting these alleged crimes.

I'd like to know how many non-student athletes they are prosecuting. Considering the quantity of athletes in the state they are pursuing, it stands to reason there are a considerable quantity of non-athletes that they would have also encountered doing the same things.

I'm not saying that being a student athlete is the same as being in a protected class under the law, but if the DCI is only going to charge athletes for their alleged underage and falsification of documents crimes, it seems to me that they are being too selective on who they enforce the law against.

Note:
I'll admit to not paying super close attention to this whole thing since it has dragged on and on all summer long. I've listened to all the CF and Iowa Everywhere podcasts so I imagine I'm about as updated as anyone as far as public information goes. Perhaps this has already been brought up and it completely missed me. My apologies if so.

JP already said we have to do a better job with the compliance efforts so that's where his boss sees the problem.
That’s good- I don’t live up there so I don’t follow the local Ames/DM media too closely and I don’t know how this is being treated by the admin.
Glad they’re handling it like they should.

We are all working through the grieving process on this one. I for one have made some dumb comments on the thread as I work through this issue. I have now accepted what has happened and have chose to live with it. But I offer a guide to help our Cyclone brothers and sisters also trying to figure out this horrible situation…

Denial - I think most people are past this stage now that a lot of details are coming out. I don’t hear anyone still saying, “Well, at least they didn’t bet on ISU football games….” We now know the facts. It happened and it wasn’t good.

Anger - These posts will be along the lines of “How are these people so dumb?”, “CMC has lost control”, or the snarky “5 star culture, eh?”. I think we have to remind these people how great the program has been the last few years and hope they remember what a great run we’re on.

Bargaining - These people are in the camp that believes “This is a national problem that everyone else is hiding from”, “I bet school X won’t be investigated”, and “It’s so stupid that some state bureaucrats had it out for us”. They may very well be correct, but they need time to heal. The Ronnie Harmon jokes have been a great way to diffuse the situation and remind everyone that history repeats itself.

Depression - A lot of Cyclone fans seem to be at this stage. The “Bet the under for total wins this season” crowd. I suggest they be reminded that the roster has been built with young, quality recruits that are ready to get some playing time. Maybe they could go back through the games from last year and remember where they were at when dekkers threw that gut-wrenching interception or incomplete pass to kill drive after drive.

Acceptance - Congratualtions! You made it. You are ready to start the football season following the team you love, in a conference that is kicking ***, and in a year that we get to celebrate ISU’s greatest athlete.

Let’s go!!!
Not sure about the majority of your post, but there should be a category for Numbed Acceptance. I'm numb by the whole thing, accept it, and am ready for some football.

Hopefully the team has the players and team motivation to have a really good year, and against most peoples expectations. It's time for some FB!!

DCI won’t comment on an ongoing investigation.

Obviously not going to lose his job but I don't agree with this at all. For all the talk of culture during his tenure, now we know the locker room was full of some pretty bad team leaders. He can't babysit everyone all the time, that's why part of his job is cultivating the right kind of player leadership to stop stuff like this from happening. He has a huge job in front of him fixing that now.

That’s it, for now on, mandatory daily phone checks!!

Part of me is very concerned that 25% of our starters are gone including QB, RB, TE, OL, and DL and part of me is saying “those starters won 4 games last year” and think we’ll be fine.
Not to mention they were obviously the least intelligent and team-oriented. The culling of those players likely improves the team chemistry and performance.

Scandal? JFC.
It is. When you have players betting on games they played in…that’s pretty scandalous.
It sucks, but I’m not going to sugar coat it.

@Bigman38 said it best- CMC has some work to do repairing our culture, but I stand behind him CMC and everything he’s done for our program 100%.

Nothing should happen to CMC, but that’s not always how bureaucracies work. They’re usually ran by scared people that are more concerned about keeping their jobs than doing what’s right.
