I'll be curious what happens from here. Yeah all of these guys were punished via the NCAA, but that's really not a legal justification to not pursue charges.
They(the state) took full advantage of those kids just wanting this behind them. This has been hell for all of them. Glad a few of them held out and hopefully this investigation gets turned inside out
So not to make this political but anyone out there know the best people to contact to share what a colossal waste of time and money this was?
Maybe there's a former player who works in the state senate that might be interested

You do this whole investigation, indict, then can't meet a simple filing deadline that you knew had to be coming for months?!?!?

The NCAA is not bound by constitutional rights for search. So, even if the evidence was gathered illegally, they can still use it for their investigation. So I don’t know that this gets dropped.
It starts to feel like an investigation designed more to get NCAA penalties than criminal ones.
Gotta imagine the missed deadline was on purpose to make the case go away. This way, the state does not have to admit fault when dismissing the charges formally.
Yup which isn't the mission of the Iowa DCI, so they over stepped and wasted taxpayer money.
Sounds an awful lot like parallel construction. My guess would be that somebody with access to certain databases abused that privilege and was cross referencing college sports rosters against betting records.
Fun part is, the same type of system that logs who makes bets, also logs who accesses records. I hope we see some civil suits, and soon. Including naming the john and/or jane doe behind such devious actions.
That's why I hope some of them press forward with civil suits.
There are people in sensitive positions that appear to have clearly abused their power for malicious purposes.
I think that a good old fashioned cluster is more likely than maliciousness. DCI agent gets a hot tip and is excited to prove themselves. Do the investigation, possibly violating due process, hand off to county attorneys. Story County office, in particular, REALLY goes for it, and possibly overcharges the minors. Defendants are more than ready to make it all go away, negotiate a plea, the end. Except for Enyi (and now Hanika), who has the resources and motivation to fight. And now the Story County attorney realizes that DCI was perhaps a bit sloppy with their investigation, and here we are. Oops.
I'm still waiting for someone who is NOT affiliated with an athletics program to get charged with something. Can't tell me that the only underaged gamblers on those two campuses were athletes and athletic department employees.
We used to have one of those but he got neutered by the last legislature.
