ISU defeats Iowa (DEPTH THOUGHTS)

I thought Uthoff was one of those that we had to cool on because of those recruiting violations.

Maybe originally, but when he transferred, he paid his own way for a year to play for Iowa. He visited here, but he wanted to be a Hok pretty bad if he paid his own way for a year.

It's easy to use "depth"' against cupcakes. When that "depth" does not perform against major competition, is it really "depth"?

That is what many of us have said all week. Maybe the media will stop using the depth thing now. I may scream next time I hear this on the radio.

Iowa is a very deep and talented team but they overestimated their depth IMO. This was their first true road game, road games kind of separate the men from the boys. IMO that shrunk down the quality of their bench but they still stuck with it. While he's not the best player on their team by far, I think they play better when Gessell is on the floor. Getting 25 minutes of Woodbury also threw a wrench in their gameplan, usually he fouls out and that gets everyone else minutes.

The "X" factor in Iowa's rotation is it keeps the legs fresh of the starters (read: White) for their transition game.

College kids who have only played 1 game in the last 2 weeks can handle some extra minutes if you ask me. They have good players off the bench compared to everyone else's bench but not when they are playing against our starters.

Iowa's depth was great for their tourney and will come into play in conference/post season tourney as well but it just doesn't have quite the impact during non conference games with huge breaks between. Not just from being more/less tired but the coaching staff had plenty of time to scout guys, its tough to sneak up on anyone with a weeks worth of prep.

I think Olaseni should start over Woodbury. He plays way more anyways, why not just start him? Uthoff seems like a solid player. McCabe is tough, but didn't have it going last night and Peter Jok is a freshman. Clemmons has been quiet this year but could be a good player in future for them. I think the depth is over hyped as well. They are deep, but I mean its not great talent coming out. None of those players will take over a game. I'll take 7-8 really good players over 4 or 5 good players with 5 average at best players coming off the bench.

Let's see, the master of this great depth put Zac McCabe and Peter Joke into a tight game and they were Chuck Barkley's favorite word.

There's that.
