ISU defeats Iowa (DEPTH THOUGHTS)

Their depth didn't work for them in this game. That said, I suppose I don't hate the hoks as virulently as some. One of my three favorite brothers went to school there. I also have a family of cousins that lived in Iowa City. Spent plenty of time there as a youth. That said, they played a great game. We just played a better game in the clutch. I think they will be a team to contend with all year. They have lots of weapons for scoring the basketball. ISU needs to concentrate on continued improvement. I want this team to go as far as they possibly can. Go Cyclones.

 And I thought this was just an urban legend about Iowa fans.

Jok looks like a true freshman against good competition. I think Fran made a mistake by not redshirting him. Olaseni and Clemmons are situational guys. The truth about Iowa's depth is that there are five guys on the benches that could potentially give quality minutes in a very specific type of game, but no way should Fran be running a nine or ten man rotation game in game out.

This was a game of two pretty evenly matched quality teams. We were fortunate to come away with a win. We will take it. The Hawks bench did not play real well. So what. Kane struggled some but still found a way to contribute with 9 big assists. Matt Thomas had a tough time as well, but he will still have good games for us going forward. Naz Long and Monte Morris gave us a lift. Have to like how the Clones found a way to win.

I think some of those guys Iowa uses as their "depth" should be more like how Fred uses Edozi or SDW. They should be strictly situationally and not used in a regular rotation.

But they can go 10 deep. That should mean something. DEEEEEEEPPPPPP

They didn't have oglesby...they didn't have quite enough depth. They woulda won with that 12th guy.

None of Jok, Olaseni, or Clemmons did much to affect the game positively for the Hawks. Woodbury got abused every time he stepped out to defend. The rest of their bench was basically a non factor--ISU's bench outscored Iowa's. When you boil it right down, the Hawks talk about their depth a lot, but it sure didn't help them win tonight.

You gotta be able to sort the BS from good analysis.

AND I thought Clemmons was one of the top backup PGs in the country and teams like Duke and UNC would be clamoring to have his 5 points a game because he is a defensive machine.

Hopefully you're joking, which I think you are. Oglesby would have gotten abused defensively.

And don't forget that we should also have Richard Amardi on our team, if not for the Bubu debacle.

How about that depth for Iowa?
Uthoff 5-10 fg, 4 pf (looked okay)
McCabe 0-7 fg, 4 pf
Olaseni 1-1 fg, 2 pf
Jok 0-2 fg
Clemmons 1-2 fg
Stokes 0-0 fg

Give me a solid 7-8 like ISU any day.

Iowa's depth is overstated, and depth is not needed in college hoops. Some of our best teams under Larry and Floyd went 7 deep.

It is a good luxury to have even mediocre players that can come of the bench and give solid minutes in the event a starter is not producing, a guy off the bench gets hot, or somebody gets in foul trouble. Against Notre Dame they probably don't win without big games by Olesani and McCabe.

But yes, I'll take what we have - 7-8 guys that can all play vs. what Iowa has, which I see as a very good core of 3 in White, Marble and Gessel, with a bunch of decent to mediocre guys eating up minutes.

As most clones predicted. Edozie and SDW provided the exact same depth, if not more depth, than Iowa's 8th, 9th, 10th men. Uthoff and Naz were a push for sophomores off the bench, Morris was way better than any other Iowa sub.

The best team in the state of Iowa the past 30 years had a six man rotation, but 1/3 of that rotation was All Americans.

Depth is entirely overrated unless you have injuries or foul trouble.

I realize that Iowa's bench didn't do a whole lot, but had we gotten in that much foul trouble with our bigs, we probably would have lost by 10-15. So their depth did help them.

Their depth just gives them about 15 more fouls to dole out.

Fern's a low mid-major coach.

He's used to having a roster of players with holes in their games.

The acorn doesn't fall far from the low mid-major tree.

You have to hype something.
Their so-called depth made Fran think they could be agressive an withstand the fouls. Even with a careeer night from White, it obviously didn't work.
