ISU and the Media

Two more weeks and this thread will be irrelevant. Spring football, Scrabble and the Cubs threads will be the show here. Drake will be in march madness for a round.

You have to win to get attention. You have to beat more than Century State to be noted.

On the other hand, the lack of local coverage is ridiculous. I don't think it's too much to ask for a metro area of 500K that's within 30 miles of the ISU campus to have at least one media outlet/show that is slanted toward the Clones at least some of the time.

I can agree with that. However, I do agree with other people that there's little chance of national media caring at all because our team is terrible.

It's true, other than us, not too many people care about ISU BB.

I doubt if many people national even care about Drake, and they are winning!! Until they can get some Cinderella tournament coverage, people don't even know where Drake is.

Actually people do care about Drake around the country...for one it is kind of a "coming out of nowhere" story that people like and secondly, people around the country that support a team that will be in the NCAA are looking at what other teams will be in the dance that they may have to play.

Yeah, I bet there's tons of people around the country really hoping they can avoid or get matched up with Drake. In reality 95% of the country still doesn't know who Drake is and any fan with a team in the tourney is hoping like heck they get Drake instead of someone in one of the "power conferences."

I've adopted a new principle: "Only losers whine about the media".

The media is what it is. If you allow the media to become an excuse, you're already not doing your job. Whether that is the POTUS, or ISU Men's Basketball.

After living in several parts of Big12 country in Texas and now being in Houston I have found that many people don't even know ISU exist that are going to other B12 schools.
Let's face it, we have never been great at basketball. Sure we've had runs and streaks that have come and gone, but we've never been a KU, or a MSU. We all hope we can some day, but we really shouldn't be surprised that ISU is not known nationally.

Disagree with you on that. We were a very good program from the Mid 80's through 2000.

MSU success has mostly been pretty recent. KU is at another level.

Hilton is a magical place and all we need is some stablity in the program and success will come again. Greg McDermott brings that stability and all we need now is time.

Really I'd rather not have the media focused on us right now.

This is why I am really hopeful that 1700 taps into the Cyclone market with local shows. Even some non-biased reporting would be nice.

Sounds like 1700 is already riding the Drake bandwagon pretty hard. They have been sponsoring the gamewatches at Boston's, and giving away a bunch of 1700 "Iowa's Sports Leader" gear. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to have some variety in town, and I prefer ESPN radio to FSN for national broadcasts...but how do you already annoint yourself as "Iowa's Sports Leader"?

Winning fixes a lot of that. When we consistantly finish in the middle to lower half of the Big 12 in all sports, it is only natural we get very little respect. We need to make people give us coverage for the good reasons and not the bad. That might include beating teams we are not suppose to beat once in awhile. Someone other than Iowa, even though that is the most fun one.
