Is this sustainable?

It's interesting reading the thread, and i tend to agree with the idea that fatigue, lack of great offensive players, and just the pure grind of the schedule and the style we play will cause some tough stretches. I also think the inverse is true. I can see this defensivec style causing a couple DGAF losses for the top tier of teams, where they just played a grinder on Saturday and here we come Monday or Tuesday with our physical style, our tenacity, and a Kansas or Texas or Baylor just mails it in in the second half. The b12 is a grind for everyone, after all.

I hope so! Not trying to be a downer, we have looked so f'n good! The sky is the limit with these guys, let's see.

Just keeping my nut cup fully secured.

Yeah you never know but they can win at TCU, OSU, and Kansas State for starters.

They should at least have a chance at Tech and Texas.

This team finishes off Baylor last year when we had them on the ropes.

Wherever we finish, this team will be a nightmare draw for anyone in KC for the conference tourney

Yes it is sustainable esp inside Hilton Coliseum....I told my wife last night that the Cincinnati Bearcats used the same kind of Defense to WIN TWO NATL TITLES AND LOST A THIRD ONE TO LOYOLA CHICAGO WITH THIS KIND OF DEFENSE!!

Really worry the lack of bodies going to catch up at some point. Playing too hard, too aggressive - fatigue and injuries going to take a toll in Big 12. But cross that bridge when we get there.

I believe our Elite Eight team went basically 6 deep. These guys have worked their butts off in the offseason, so they'll be fine barring injuries.

At this point I’m not talking about just making the tournament, are we a legitimate top 15 team?

I love this team. That said, it will be difficult to keep up this intensity level when you play two big XII teams per week for two months. I think they are easily a tournament team and will finish 4th, 5th, or 6th in the conference.

Set the tone early. Offense wasn’t going to be the facet that won the game. 90 pts for Iowa was already out the window after 3 minutes.
I AGREE Gunnerclone....I thought that the hoks would have trouble getting to 60 points.....

HILTON MAGIC IS BACK BIG TIME BABY!! (trying to imitate the great **** Vitale)

13-0 non conference
conference home - hoping for 6 or more.
conference road - hoping for 3 or more
Thats 22 wins right there and a tourney birth.
and that would probably be one of the best turnaround jobs I have ever seen.

we can beat anyone IMO. i think we can improve a lot offensively.

fatigue, Injuries and sickness will factor in. maybe we get some luck.

I have to admit I have significant morning wood thinking about that helpside defense I saw last night.

In years past, we had guys who could go lights out from 3: Naz, Thomas, McGee, etc.

Those teams didn’t defend like this. Maybe we don’t need superhuman production beyond the ark. We crushed Iowa in mid-range.

Who are the expected losses at home?

Baylor, KU, and Texas?

One thing that sucks about the Baylor game is its Jan 1. Hope TJ takes the team to hotel or something that night.

also, there will be ALOT of people traveling for family and the bowl game.
and the students won't be back.

Hopefully ISU gets creative on getting people there.

but if we play average or better I don't see anyone beating us at home other than Baylor and KU. I think we beat texas at home.

I do not worry about energy at Hilton for this team, even without students. The place will be rocking.

A couple things that I think have already been mentioned. Getting run down is a valid concern but I'm not as worried.....

TJ seems like a smart guy and realizes how much effort they are putting out. He'll adjust accordingly if he sees signs they are wearing down.

9 guys getting significant minutes is actually a pretty deep rotation. You've already seen games where Grill and Jackson get more minutes than Gabe and Brockington, I think that's by design to keep them fresh.

We essentially have a 3 week break now before Baylor, we can afford to mange minutes the rest of December and still lay a beatdown on these 3 teams.

Our defense isn't West Virignia where we full court press all 40 minutes and run around fouling all night. We pick them up in the frontcourt and then play sound, under control defense. Yeah, we put out alot of effort but it's nothing like a West Virginia or even what Iowa was doing last night. It looked to me like they were wearing down even going 11 deep because essentially they didn't even break into our lead when full court pressing.

All the above points are why this is certainly sustainable.

6-3 at home and 2-7 on the road is around what I'd predict now.

With a win against a bad Mizzou team in January.......they will be 13-0 in non-con. They will lose no more than 7 in conference.......if that. This team WILL be a single digit seed in the tourney........period! The only way that isn't happening is if there are one or two injuries.

Watching the defense is so great. They overplay ball pressure, which forces the other team to go in a direction the defense wants them to go. Right into the help and inevitable double. We know exactly where we need to be to stop the ball and then fill for weak side rebounds. They do play very hard, so don’t get this twisted, but I’m honestly not sure they are sapping energy as much as people think. The positioning is superb. I’d be willing to bet the other team is expending just as much or more energy on that end than the defense.

At this point, the only thing I can see another team doing in the half court that might work involves a lot of skip passes, which are very risky considering the length of guys like Kalscheur, Brockington and Enaruna. Hunter is also out there just baiting passes. Iowa did a decent job of this early with back screens and long passes over those screens. It was not sustainable for them.

We need to get better against pressure, which was evident last night.
