Iowa State Transfer/Recruiting Class 2023

Defense is more than just athleticism. It's effort and mental. Gabe was an elite defensive player because he wanted to be one and had the smarts/experience to execute it. Matt Thomas at first was not good defensively but developed into a plus defender.

My concern is yes well be more athletic next year but with that we are younger and does defense fall off because of that?

For what it's worth, I do think the defense declines next year. Hard to maintain that level of defense with so much turnover. Chris has stated that our style of play, TJ's first two years, is very deliberate, due to personnel. I do think we'll see an improvement in offense (after portal is all said an done) that somewhat negates the defensive drop off.

My guess is that it is TJ's preference. We force turnovers with our double teams. Also, somehow we seldom allow the unguarded man to get near the basket. When we double team, we get the ball or we force a throw out to someone far from the basket. I have to think that is something TJ sees as an advantage and will use with any roster.
Overall it has worked. But there were games like Iowa, Mizzou, Pitt, etc. where teams with great ball movement made us pay for trapping.

Then there were games like TT and WVU where guards killed us off the dribble by getting mismatches.

Ideally, we would have defenders who can play tough man-on-man or trapping.

I think our guards were good straight up defenders. I think it had more to do with our need to create turnovers as we were somewhat offensively challenged.
I thought guys like Gabe, Kunc and Jaren were great team defense guys- but not the best on-ball. We struggled to stop dribble penetration by guard who were strong off the bounce.

I was thinking about this too. Upgrading overall athleticism/length will help, especially as we add more guys who can defend multiple positions (big and small). The last two years our defense has been much more 'schemed' (granted Gabe and some others were pretty damn good individually) rather than straight up man defense. Required a LOT of effort, but it worked. With the athleticism we're bringing in, I would think that we'll be more of a straight up man defense going forward and less of the double-team/entire unit defense we've seen. Don't get me wrong, I think we will still have the emphasis on D, just different execution.

Probably a bad comparison but Kansas comes to mind. Recently, I don't think they're Elite, or run any exotic defense (stats may say I'm wrong) but they match-up well enough across the board to be pretty solid on D year in and year out.
Or watch the National Championship game. Both UConn and SDSU fought through screens vs. the automatic switch. They switched when they had to, but as last resort or small on small.

Final Four teams almost always have a Top 10 offense and a Top 35 defense. I think it's okay if the defense falls off a little if it comes with big gains in the offense.

Pav and Gilbert are previously played PG for their past schools.. Considering Lipsey and Williams on the roster.. I bet only one is a take..

I prefer Pav to Gilbert as I think his shooting/scoring upside is much higher..

Darrion Williams would be a great piece at the wing.. 6'6", bigger than Jaren Holmes, can play 2-3, nice dribble, 36% from 3 (3 attempts/game), and a 80% FT shooter (good translation to 3 shooting).

Lipsey
Pav
D. Williams
Omaha
Tre

J. Williams
Milan
BRE/Ward
Watson

That would make me happy
Gilbert was recruited by TJ before so maybe he’ll commit on his visit

Re: Discussion of defensive fall-off in favor of better offensive production: I think we don't have to worry about sacrificing a little on one end to improve the other, as long as everyone is committed to working at defense, individually and as a team concept.

Some players whose biggest upside is shooter/scorer might not be have to be the team's most outstanding defenders, just be willing to embrace the philosophy.

Yeah I loved this year's team but goodness the FT shooting was tough to watch
Definitely one of the negative elements. I'm not sure how many additional wins might have come with even a modest bump in FT%, without digging deeper, but it did have an effect on a few occasions. In some cases, iffy accuracy from the line also came when the opponent shot it well.
