Iowa State OU postgame video

even that worries me a bit. We got killed by the last two decent non con games we played in Iowa and Mizzou. I guess it will just depend on matchups, if we get one where our style of play has a better chance.
That mizzou game means very little to me. It came at a time in the season when we were squarely in hunt for a big 12 title, and focus was on that. Plus I think that was the first full game without Grill.

With past teams, the clones could rest on offense. One driver to the hoop with 4 guys getting ready to shoot a 3. Not the case this year. Everyone is involved on offense, quickly passing the ball around the perimeter. I'm not sure that passing game gets anything done, except tire the team out. We never seem to get an easy shot at the rim.

If they made two more FTs they are above their season percentage. FTs were not a major problem yesterday.

The Oklahoma loss was pretty simple, 31% shooting just isn’t going to win a game against a top 75 opponent. If we shoot just 38% from the field we win.

I don't think it is Jaz at all.

But what is weird about this team since the Texas Tech game is that when things aren't going well, they just lose their minds. In the OSU games and yesterday, they just start tossing up shots like the poor guy that is shooting for the lawn tractor. It's like they've never seen a basketball ever. The last 2 Saturday home games, I knew as soon as we were down that we weren't going to win.

But at the same time, they've had some games where they've played very well in that stretch (TCU, Kansas).

But in the moment, it is like they can't get themselves out of whatever funk they are in. The timeouts don't seem to help.

It would be interesting to know when it exactly started. Because I didn't think it was that way at the beginning of the season (save Iowa). Early on, I thought we were capable of pulling out of a funk. But now? If we are down more than 6 in one of those games, we are screwed. My best guess would be this all really started in the West Virginia game. And it is part of the reason why I feel like a well placed technical by the coach, might have helped things a bit.

Usually not one to suggest this but does the team have access to a sports psychologist?

10 out of 17 is lackadaisical and shiftless. You can try to excuse it but it's not acceptable

It's a team full of bad/streaky shooters.

It's not surprising they don't shoot free throws well or consistentky.
That was my worry heading into the year: we have streaky, inconsistent shooters. We shot relatively well to start the year, which was awesome. At this point, they've swung the other direction and I think we will end up about where I thought we would at the start of the year. Not a bad season; if we can get back into shooting form by the post-season we could have a fun end of the year.

Kind of an aside, but related to FT shooting. I've always thought that missing the front end of a 1&1 should count as missing 2 FTs in the box score.

This game I felt turned on 2 possessions. Towards the end of the first half we missed a layup, got the rebound, missed 2 put backs, and ended up with Holmes shooting and missing 2 FTs. There are no excuses for not getting points and it felt a bit deflating. Earlyish in the second We were playing great d, forced a tough shot, 3 different players had their hands on the ball but couldn't quite control it (should have been displacement on the rebound) and they hit an open 3. That's a 5 pt swing, plus momentum.

Overall, I don't think effort was the problem. Right now we're a one-pitch pitcher. Once they time up our fastball we don't have a curveball. I'm not sure 'have pride, play harder' is the answer. We need another dimension to our offense.

It’s sort of funny because earlier in the season CW was saying on his podcasts about how this team was different then last year because it was much better offensively and not quite as good defensively. But then on todays podcast it is all about how limited we are offensively.

Seems like fair analysis tbh. We were fine offensively through 23 games of the season. Not a top 25 offense by any means but miles better than last year. Our best stretch was definitely during the first 6 games of the Big 12 season but even after that we had a terrific offensive performance against KState at home followed by some good nights against Texas Tech and KU.

Wheels have completely fallen off since the Ok State loss at home though. No one has shot it well outside of Jaz for 1 game, too many turnovers, not generating good looks, etc.

I don’t buy the “missing easy looks” talk as being the primary problem. Of course they did miss some easy looks, but hit those at a normal rate for most teams and you’re still maybe losing to the last place team at home.

Like last year compared to most teams they aren’t getting a good number of good looks with consistency. When last years team scored it was often Brockington hitting some high degree of difficulty shots. When this years team scores it’s often Gabe and Grill hitting tough looks.

I don’t think this team has a lot of offensive talent. But there are more problems to our offense than simply guys’ inability to hit open shots.

Missing lots of easy shots almost guarantees trouble in a Big 12 game. It is so hard to get easy shots. You have to make a good percentage, especially ones close to the hoop. Everything else is different if we made a half dozen of those easy shots.

And we had plenty of close-in easy shots to get to the 38%. 31% is even worse when you look at the shot chart and see where they were taken from.

There's no excuse for not making free throws. Nothing except poor coaching and/or laziness.

Do you think these players were lazy and had poor coaching? They missed free throws.
